EL - many aspects of overall design were fixed and refined in the EL - in particular, aspects of suspension were sorted in the EL that were not quite right in the EF.

From a tech point of view, the EL uses Dizzy and single coil - which gives you a tiny bit more flexibility to tweak timing a bit on the EL where you can't do anything with it in the EF (except for J3 module of course). EL does have the old bugbear TFI in that case but the EF Coilpack can be considered just about as bad.

EL Fairmont got thicker glass for a quieter interior, and more deadening in the firewall.
They also got colour coded seatbelts, and buttons (as mentioned)

And if you get a 6cyl Ghia, you get a Tickford motor.

EF Series 2 came with Tickford goodies as well.

I guess that is personal choice, but colour coded buttons are usually more appealing than black buttons on grey (<--- Australian). Interior also came in Cappuccino colouration.

As Greenmachine mentioned, EL run distributor which allows for easier/flexible timing tweaking, whereas EF are electronic ignition, meaning J3 chip/aftermarket ECU required for timing tuning.

I'd grab an EL...but I could be biased.

Most people that have an EF will say EF is better, and most people that have en EL will say EL is better. The EL is newer and more refined. Its your choice

I'd go for an EL XR6 rather then a fairmont at all

EL Fairmont similar cars really, some suspension refinement as mentioned a plus is they are obviously newer.. They however did make a big leap backwards with going to distributor ( a CRAP system ) TFI designed to fail. more moving parts and consumables (cap, button) Don't know how many times i rescued my cousins EL with dead tfi over about 3-4 yrs and my eb as well. Dad had his ef 7 years with not 1 ignition drama at all. same with my old EF i just converted my EL to coil pack as well. Tuning via twisting the distributor isn't as good as a J3 tune anyway.

I think the coil pack is a huge bonus so I would prefer an ef on that alone

One of the few lol, you have to admit coil pack is a better system.
