Ultimately you should look at both and get the absolute best condition one you can find of either within your budget.

BUT.... if you have a choice of two good ones.... go the Fairmont - preferably a Ghia if you can.

Why cart around the extra weight of the LWB if you don't have to!!

I wouldn't rule out either, but look for the best price / condition. The Fairlane will have more back seat room, for drunken mates or Girlfriends. In time they will be worth more as they are no longer made. At the moment they will both be the cheapest ever, as time goes on they will be harder to find in good condition rather than worn out. 20 years is the point where most cars are the cheapest. There will still be one owner good condition ones around, these are the ones to look for. At your age I doubt you will start collecting them and keep them forever, but imagine if you ( someone ) did that with phase 3 GT's ? And for the record I still have a car I bought new while in my teens. The car is over 30 years old now.

With the Fairmonts, Ghia's, Fairlanes and LTD's be sure to check that the heater works. If it doesn't then it will most likely be the blend door motor with requires the dash out. A quick climate control diagnostic will come up with any error codes...E2 is the one you don't want (Blend door motor).
I didn't check the heater when I bought my EL Fairmont wagon and when I went to use the heater I discovered it didn't work and after a diagnostic I saw the E2 error code.

I have had two fairmont's and now fairlane.

will say both my monts were sixes and the fairlane is an 8.

i am loving the long wheel base look great when slammed. my opinion on a fairmont is its a GLi with power windows and climate control. so if your gonna get one get a Ghia or Fairlane get everything then.
