mine is on a stock bottom end and it saw 6000 every day atleast maybe 10 times a day, ive done about 25,000k on this motor its got exactly 190psi compression on each cylinder so shes healthy! love the au bottom end so smooth to rev u dont feel anything no matter how hard u rev it.

Fact is they are a long stroke engine, they're not made to rev hard (I was only going about 500rpm over the stock limiter, not much in the scheme of things). That and the rather heavy/slow rocker gear the E series had doesn't bode well for a revver. The AU head/rocker gear were lighter and to different proportions made them happier at higher revs. Personally, IMO the best way to make more power out of these sixes is to force some air in 'em. Searching for more power with revs is going to be a very expensive and ultimately fruitless proposition. Yeah I was only looking at going to 6000 but want to make sure its reliable. Seeing as I will be getting headwork done anyway would i be better off changing to an AU head and a cam ground to suit an AU head? (i have ef head at the moment which from the factory) I want to keep the E series block so i dont have to worry about sump/k-frame mods, plus i was planning on running AU rods and ACL pistons, but i believe different cranks had different counterweights? Are some better?

Two problems...
1. Its much harder to get cams for the AU setup. Other people are reving to 6Krpm plus on the E series head just fine. You'd probably best talk to a engine builder that knows the I6 back to front. 2. Bottom end talk is out of my experience.

my setup is EF Head Tickford with lots of $$ spent with the AU bottom the head has no trouble with revving.

okay mad, will probably get an ef head then (as apparently they are the best of the e series anyway). It will be getting worked/rebuilt anyway.
With bottom ends does anyone know which of the e series is best (if any) for seeing revs (particularly the crank). I think i remember reading that ef's have 12 counterbalances on their crankshaft, where's EL's went back to 8 or something (don't know if this is correct/implications) p.s if anyone knows any good engine builders/machinists around brisbane that know a bit about the sohc i6 i would love to know. I will be building myself with the help of my old man but will need someone to do the machining..

just get ur bottom end balanced n get urself an acl rebuild kit, mine will do 6000rpm all day with a standard tickford head no worries.

Yep EF have 12, EL have 8 and AU is internally balanced. But I've never noticed the differance. Just get your standard engine rebuilt, my opinion .

from what ive been told and read the au bottom end is the strongest and the best for balancing.

Nothing beats an AU bottom end its basically a BA bottom end, well balanced smooth and stronger

had my ef reving to 6800 for about 5 years/30000km now, the only problem i have is the lifters dont like the double valve springs at that rpm
mines an Au bottom end, hypatec pistons, Hastings rings, ACL Race series Bearings and Gasket set, JP Performance timing chain and high volume oil pump, bored to 4.1, 10 thou off the block, 40 thou off the head, spent about 20 hours porting the head, double valve springs, big cam, there a tough motor!!! also has EMS stinger ecu, 800hp fuel pump, pacey comp extractors, car is for sale on car sales if any1 wants to have a look in penrith nsw, search rego AD52DO |
