Guys, I have a really unusual problem... I have a fairly bad misfire at around half to 2/3rds throttle in my EF 6 cyl and to cut a longish story on diagnosis short, the misfire goes away and the engine pulls as clean as when the position sensor plug is unplugged. I tried swapping a known good position sensor, but no change. it only happens under moderate to heavy load around 2/3rds throttle.
Any one got any clues , as this one is turning into a head scratcher ! The engine runs fine with it disconnected, but I would like to suss it out.

Its located in the hole used by a convential distributor ie EA's and EL's. It references TDC for #1 cylinder to allow the computer to " count " and calculate coil pack firing. Its obviously not really needed , as the engine runs and starts fine with out it... All that would be happening would be the coil output polarity reversing every engine revolution. The position sensor is the official name given in the Ford work shop manual.

Thats your cam sensor and yes you do need it. It basicaly is like your distributor and tell the coil when to fire, basic description but it will do.

no this sensor is not important on an EF...
they run batch injection and waste spark...the ecu does not need to know the positon of the cam... u must have a wiring fault id say..

maybe try swapping your computer with another ef one mate it could be a fault in the ecu itself, or try reseting it by disconnecting the battery for a few hours

I've tried ECU and disconnecting... and I can also guarantee the engine runs fine with out the cam position sensor plugged in ! Only misfires at a particular load point ie approx 2/3 rds throttle... And wriggling wiring looms etc doesnt seem to uncover any problems.

It will run at Idle and at low RPM without the Cam Postion Sensor, don't try it at higher revs. If it makes no difference with the cam sensor unplugged I would try another cam sensor. |

Tried another sensor... no change. And the engine works fine at higher revs as well !

Did this ever get sorted out?? - asking because I might have something similar happening - tho I haven't tried unplugging the cam phase sensor (CMP) yet.
Edit: ok, I unplugged my CMP and it's fixed my intermittant miss/vibration when initially accelerating from a steady throttle position (more or less cruise). With the CMP unplugged the car starts fine and idles and drives absolutely normally - and there's no miss. I'm happy enough to leave the CMP unplugged but I guess I should pull the drive out and make sure there's no broken teeth or such that might cause a more major mechanical problem down the track.
