G'day folks,
Are the any differences between these diffs physically? I've got an FG M86 ute diff to stick in my BA Pursuit. Just looking at the outside they look the same but maybe they aren't? I've got the whole thing disc to disc and I'd rather just bolt it in this weekend but, I don't want any surprises. Cheers. I'll start to answer my own question then....
I'm about to fit a 3.73 M86 from an FG XR8 into my BA2 Pursuit which has a 3.46 M86. Straight off the bat you can see a slight difference to the flange plates like locating pins and no holes for backing plates. So at this stage it looks like I'll need to swap axles/end plates.. BA... FG... I took the opportunity to blast the housing and actually use etch primer on it before painting it semi gloss black. I also TIG welded the tubes into the centre as they have a habit of coming loose and leaking. |

Ok yesterday I found that the FG diff is wider than the BA so I couldn't use it.
BA is approx 1500mm wide and FG is 1550mm. The handbrake setup is slightly different on the LH axle tube. FG has a single bracket whereas BA has two. And as I mentioned previously the endplates are different..no brake shield mounts on FG which doesn't use any. ABS sensor boss is thicker on FG to allow assembly without a spacer as used on B-series. Now to decide whether to sell the whole thing off or get the centre switched over? |

Ahh what a pain, surely a diff place will be able to swap the centre over for a reasonable price? Good idea about welding up those tubes I've had XF ones leak.

Too right Gab!
Yeah I'll give em a ring tomorrow and see what the damage is. I think the RH tube is leaking in my diff now. One thing I've discovered...the spring seats are in the same place for both and the XC 9" I have kickin around which is about 2.5" narrower overall. So the 9" will allow for seriously deep dish wheels! and a B-series diff in an FG will allow the same thing. |

Yeah I do but it's $1800 for a housing with 31spline Moser axles which are the only ones with enough meat to machine for ABS encoder wheels. Then I need a centre and all I have is 2.75,3.25 and 3.5 and all are 28spline. No point doing it for anything taller than 3.7. Oh yeah then it's more money for a special tailshaft end/yoke.

I fitted a BA M86 to my fg ute and it was a bit of a mission but worked out good in the end
I needed to move to handbrake cable mounts out about 100mm and get a new tailshaft to suit the older diff cv.....then my problem was too much power and i destroyed the factory 3.73 centre. It definately made my wheels sit a bit further in but... Its for sale if anyones keen....m86 disc to disc with a busted centre - $400 |

JoshyD, will the BA LSD fit in your sedan?
I need to upgrade for the extra power, fg lsd's seem hard to come by and I have access to a BA LSD for pretty cheap.
