Am thinking about buying a fairlane ghia 5.0 for really cheap but there's a bit of a hitch, the auto box won't change out of second gear. It changes from first fine but third can not be found, now part of me was thinking this could be lmh caused by a broken engine mount. Is that part of me on the right track or is it needing a new box? Car is pretty good nick inside and out engine runs good. Just this problem is stopping me from laying
Down the cash

Any one help?

may be an electrical problem.

Just changed the inhibitor switch module on my DL as it was causing weird box behavior, cause it was sending bogus signals to the TCU.

in mine, the gear indicator on the dash would occasionally jump around. i.e. I'd be driving long in D, and it's bounce around 3, N, D, nothing.

I got sick of it, when one day cruising along @ 110 it jumped into R, at which point the ECU obviously thought something was wrong, and dropped into limp mode. spent a bit of time @ 4500rpm thinking wtf.

Don't know if any of that helps you, but as you say it's a much cheaper option to swap. (I got a new one from eBay - bayford parts for like $80 delivered). took like 15 mins to swap, and it's fixed.

Anyone know if you can run diagnostic on your gearbox? Maybe might help narrow the list of possibilities

Certainly can.

check the tech docs here, you'll need a test light (or a diag tool) to read the codes from the TCU using some pins in the diag connector (found in the fuse box).

my bad it only covers ECU

same process but using a different pin in the diag connector.

When my inhibitor switch played up I went to a transmission shop and they hooked up one of those snap on tools diagnostic tools which helped identify it was the inhibitor switch.
