Just wondering if anyone knows how much of a difference there is between the tailgates on an EB wagon, compared to an EF or EL tailgate?
Meaning are they interchangeable? |

Yes they are.
Everything in the rear section is interchangeable from the EA through to EL wagons. The only difference from memory is that the EF/L have the rear speakers in the tailgate. A good upgrade is to find the carpeted side and tailgate skins out of the Fairmont models. There is a slight difference between the shape of the side skins between the EF and the EL but they still fit with minimal trimming of the carpet.

EA and some EB wagons tail gates dont have the high mount stop light. If yours does you need to keep it and if you fit a tailgate that does have it and your car didnt originally have it, you may find you need to hook it up as you might have issues with authorities. ED-EL do but otherwise as mentioned they are interchangable.

The lock mechanism may also be different, and the wiring for the courtesy light and central locking.
My EB1 has the rear courtesy light switch mounted near the catch in the floor, but EBII onwards have the light switch built into the lock mechanism. In the EF/EL the tailgate locks and unlocks with the central locking, but the EA-ED don't. Cheers BenJ

Cheers BenJ In my EB2, the courtesy light switch is mounted on the courtesy light itself, in the rear section of the roof of the car. There is no light switch relating to the tailgate opening at all. |

It will be built into the catch like the sedans is. The light itself should have a three position switch, so that it can be off completely, on manually, and turn on and off automatically when you open and close the tailgate.

BTW, on the subject of tailgates, what is with the tiny vacuum hose hidden inside a piece of convoluted rubber tubing on the passenger side (EB1 S Pak) Its separate from the much larger wiring loom one. I thought it would be for a rear washer hose but apparently not - when I had the car idling with the tailgate open I could hear a strange hissing noise. The tube had worn through. Its official, my car sucks
