Hey guys
I drive a 1997 El falcon wagon on dual fuel with a 68 litre gas tank (I think it's 68 litres it's above 65 anyway). Last week I fitted an Acron plastics airbox and 3" steel intake piping with a rubber boot that goes into the throttle body (siilar to the factory ford one). I got it all hooked up with the lpg/petrol but noticed the fuel consuption on lpg went from 19/l 100km (which I still feel is too high) all the way up to 30l 100km which doesn't seem right. So I figured I should go and get a tune the place I went to said it'd be $100 to have the lpg tuned and possibly have the o2 sensor replaced. The guy explained to me that the CAI/pipe probably doesn't do a whole lot with the restrictive 40mm lpg mixer ring in the intake restricting airflow. Currently the air system is on loan as I am testing it out before I decide to buy it for $300 I was just wondering given that there is a flow restriction from the lpg mixer would having this system even give enough of an improvment to warrant spending $400? (300 on airbox 100 on tune) It feels like it's more powerful/responsive but that could just be me imagining things due to the increased induction noise. (which I love but that alone isn't worth the money) I should point out that power isn't my main focus I'm more after fuel econamy since it is an old wagon and I'm a only a new p plater I don't really want to draw attention to myself so I drive fairly quietly and am saving till I get off my p's in 3 1/2 years at which point I want an XR6 Turbo or F6. |

You are not going to get good value out of it.
You'd be better off just spending the money on a good tune. |

That depends on whats causing the bad economy that you are getting.
Replace the coil, rotor, dizzy cap, leads, plugs, o2 sensor and air filter, then get a LPG place with good reputation to tune the LPG and make the feed back system is working. lastly if your car still has the factory cat converter, get it replaced. |

Thanks for the info mate Alright I'll look into replacing those things. I was planning on replacing the 02 sensor when I had it tuned just in case. I tried taking out the lpg ring and drove it on petrol for the day and all I can say is Wow! Noticiably better performance but unfortunely would still end up more expensive to run than on lpg. Another weird thing I noticed, the pod didn't whistle with the lpg ring in but now that it's out at exactly 2100rpm the pod whistles very loudly which is rather annoying imo. Just to clarify will I see any fuel econ benefit at all from this CAI system een say 0.5l/100km? By my calculations that would pay for itself in 3 1/2 years. Or would I be better off buying an after market exhaust system and possibly some slightly better headers that still fit under the factory heatshield? The only thing after doing a thorough tune up as suggested already, is to drive like a Granny.
That is THE main factor. If you drive it hard, it will use lots more fuel. If you just dawdle around, you will use less. My Wagon also has LPG, even though it is a vapour injection system. If you drive it hard on LPG, I get a bit over 300kms out of a tank. If I just cruise around, short shift it and keep up with the traffic flow, then I get 400kms out of the tank. Simple really.
