Might have to make a trip into Adelaide to a wrecker... how hard are the 3.7 gears to install?

Depends on the driver swell, my ol 3.9 has beaten many a v8 statto and assorted v6 commos an subys, whatever goes.
I'd start with a full tune, clean tb, wind up the timing, don't forget the fuel filter. If she's not running perfect intake mods will be a waste of time. |

Setting it up to beat Commodores off the lights will be different to setting it up to be a good daily driver (I see you have ladder racks, you use the ute for work?). Regardless of power or how it feels to drive, some mods make fuel consumption better (like intake) and some make it worse (like a shorter diff).
If you're already running out of fuel it might be worth considering. |

It is a work ute... she is brilliant to drive, everyone that drives it (which is a lot) says how well it drives. As for the fuel, i dont have any complaints ... i can go about 800 clicks (driving economically) and even if i do give it a hard time i usually average 700 clicks to a tank, the fuel gauge got jammed at half the other day, and i was amazed at how well it was using fuel, then it run out lol. Since i replaced the fuel pressure regulator its run bloody awesome. So maybe not worry about the gears? i can beat my cousins VT and i havent done any mods at the moment... but that bloody VZ (turns out its not a VY) is just f**king me off lol.

That's good fuel economy for an XG! If you're using it everyday, I personally would concentrate on making it a nice daily driver. You may as well make it something you enjoy spending time in. I've slowly done that to my XH (I had an XG too before) and although it's no tyre-shredder, it's got what I want. If your ute is driving well at the moment, maybe leave the gears as they are and spend some money on other things like the stereo or on the exhaust. My best investment was the service manual, cost me $230 or so for the Ford one but it's paid for itself about 20 times over. I've done heaps of other little things for minimal cost.
Let the VZ win and pay fines while you spend your money on mods. |

Don't turn your nose up to vapour injection - as good performance as petrol, along with similar consumption. Those folks thinking LPG is only good for cooking snags, need a reality check. EF/EL BBM conversion, along with an EL ECU is a worthwhile thing - good torque gains around 50-80 kmh. It's been debated on here, but IIRC someone who's done it has reported the bonnet clears okay. Hell, why not throw in EF/EL thermo fans too.

That does make more sense Thomas123, if i did do extractors, high flow cat and exhaust, would the fuel consumption get much worse?
snap0964, dont have anything against gas, but dont want to fork out the money for a conversion when I'm getting good fuel economy already... might get some thermo fans actually, hot days in stop and start traffic gets her nice and warm lol.

It's not too expensive, particularly if you can source a second hand set of extractors. I have Pacemaker 4499s and they seem pretty popular. |
