My wife is complaining again about the brake squeal on my FG falcon (85,000km, 2008).
Rotor thickness is about 1.5mm over the min spec, disk pads, I don't know what they are, but I put some blue goo on the back of the pads and it was okay for a couple of weeks, but the squeal is back. Just at that nice steady braking effort and of course the lady likes the windows down and hates people looking at the car when it squeals. I remember a lot of mercs liked to make this squeal too, after they had better wearing pads put in. What's my options here? |

"Squeaking, squealing brakes at low speeds are part of the deal. It's nothing wrong, just the way big brakes can be."

If they are just over scrap thickness there's a good chance the rotors are glazed, as well as the pads.
I'd get some DBA slotted rotors and good pads, get all the dust off the calipers, check the slides are nice and free and goo where needed. But as said before, big brakes are noisey. |

I think I might chamfer the leader edge and sand the surface, see what happens. Strikes me that soft aluminium shim behind the pads might also work, use a drink can, but you know, I was wrong once before so could be again. |

You'll probably find the pads are already angled

So, I got into it a bit yesterday.
http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=11230806 Yes the rotors are glazed, very polished. I put a bit of a chamfer on the leading edges, added one not-very-deep hacksaw cut through the middle, and with a sanding disk, roughened the surface. Result, squeal gone. For now. I expect it will come back and we will have a look at new pads and rotors. I do enjoy this car. |

glazed rotors/pads caused by inefficient braking.

Mine always squeal the first time I brake in the morning, once the brakes have been used they're fine, even leaving it for 8 hours at work, no noise.
