I'm after some feed back on an issue I've been having if possible. I've recently been experiencing a hesitation when going through rev range. It only occurs every now and again, and will only happen once and it might be fine for the rest of the trip.
I stalled the car yesterday and went to start it again, only to have it wind over and not fire on both petrol and gas. I then turned the ignition off, popped the bonnet for a quick look, tried it again and it started fine. I am suspecting a faulty relay in ignition system, would I be too far wrong? |

Does it idle rough? If so, I would check plugs and leads first.

Idles good and starts fine. the whole ignition system is fairly fresh

|
Intermittent hesitation can be caused by failing coil or TFI module on the distributor. The TFI usually just kills the car and you'd be rolling without power. The coil gradually fails. Starting the car might get worse every time or when hot it might fail completely until cooled down again.

do you think a coil issue would be as intermittent as this? I hope its not the coil as it was changed only the other month. Is there a relay in the ignition system?

Yeah Phongus on the XG. Do you think its likely to be one of the 4 in a row near the battery or one of the other 2 mounted further back in the engine bay (i think one is brown)?

Did a quick google and found this.

They may be relatively new, but that doesn't mean new can't be broken in the first place. Check the resistance on the leads and see if they are all good. Also make sure the leads are on tight on the plugs and distributor cap. To answer your previous question regarding coil. I had a working coil, drove it up the driveway, unplugged it while working on something, then plugged it back in and the coil just died and didn't work. Replaced with a known working one and all was good. After a few months of driving and suddenly the car struggles to start at the shops (only drove for 5 mins). Car started fine in the driveway but was a down right a*** to start at the shops.

Bit of an update on this... Firstly thanks phone us and others who have assisted me to this point. I swapped a new coil in and it worked good until when the car warmed up, then it died again and wouldn't start. I returned later that day to pick it up and it started and ran fine until it warmed up, then died.
Is this possibly a small break in electrical circuit somewhere that opens up enough to cause issues when it's warm? |

TFI/coil tend to die in pairs, I assume because if one fails it causes stress on other parts, but that's just my take on it. See if you can get a second hand working TFI module and replace it. Might work. Also...phone us...HAHAHAHA
