Just reading the service manual and have a q. about the auto transmission operation as i'm not sure i'm reading it right, wasn't quite sure if i'm interperating the aberviations correctly.
Anyway under the shift speeds for the forte model we have 1-2 2-3 and 3-4 of course.. then the ones i'm wondering about, under economy mode it's the m3l-u and 3l-u.. so is that saying manual 3rd lock up and 3rd lock up shift speeds? Then the one under normal mode the last shift is 4l-u, so 4th Lock-Up ? So does this mean in economy mode it doesn't lockup in forth, only in non economy mode ? I assumed it would be the other way for some reason. Under what driving conditions then is it best to choose either economy mode or normal ? ie which for city or highway. cheers |

Personally I leave my EF (Basically the same trans as the AU) in Normal while city driving up to 60kph as she locks in 4th @ 60kph and flick over to Econ when driving above 80kph. Could be what the manual is referring to, as when in Econ she wont go into 4th below 70kph. The converter still locks up in 4th in Econ, just at higher speeds.

In a Falcon with 4sp auto, it is best to leave it in 3rd for around town, 60kmh and less.
This saves using the brakes ( feathering ) and causing them to get polished/glazed and making noises. 3rd gear in the auto is 1:1.
