Hey guys, just checking. I have an AU VCT head on EF block. The VCT cam sprocket has both an arrow and a line on it. Which one is the timimg maak? I assume it's the line? Should the front or rear cam lobes be facing up when the engine is at TDC? Thankyou

Hey thanks, yeah, the last one I had it was a dot, you're right. But this one has an arrow & a line instead of the dot!

at TDC the lobes of the cam at the front of the head are pointing down and the lobes at the rear are pointing up

Excuse my amature sklls, but if the cam lobes are pointing up does'nt that mean valves are open? So when balancer mark is lined up with timing cover mark and cam line/dowel is a few mm above inlet head face cam lobes on no1 cylinder should be facing down?

aplogy accepted, lol

I think I might have damaged valve/s. The timing is right now, but I made a careless mistake before & tried to start the car with incorrect timing. So now when I try to start the car it spins, but has a weird sound (like a vacume cleaner and a faint popping from the exhast every so often. It only spins from the starter motor, but the engine won't acually fire..Is there any way to tell without lifting the head?

Best way is to do a compession test on each cylinder. If you can't get a compression tester, pull your rocker cover and check each rocker when the lobe is down, valve closed and see if you have excessive play in the rocker, should be none,

Ok, sopretty sure I have to face I have busted the valve/s. The engine whirls over, but it sounds like it has no comp.
Does anyone in victoria do drive in/drive out BA/f/G engine conversions for E series. This is a serious question, as I have spent alot on my EF & want to keep it a long time. Thanks for the help so far guys.

Looks like you have bent a valve. Are others like this or only this one.

The rear one (firewall) on the inlet side is the same. All the otheres have no where near as much of a gap. I'll pull the head, not happy Jan! Thanks for helping.
