Stacker interfaces aren't standardised, ever manufacturer has their own proprietary standard. Your Kenwood H/U, assuming it has a stacker interface built in, would most likely only be able to drive stackers made by Kenwood. It's a marketing ploy pure and simple, they get you to spend more money by effectively forcing you to buy all the major components of your system from them. The Ford stackers, at least in the EF and EL and possibly the EA-ED as well, utilise Alpines M-BUS interface meaning you need either the Ford factory H/U or an M-BUS compatible Alpine unit in order to drive it.

As Laximah said, the stacker interface should be the same across both EF and EL so it should work either way. AFAIK the only diff between the EF and EL factory head units (apart from the front panel colour and screen printing) is the latter has the mobile phone mute gear in it, everything else is identical meaning the stacker should work in either model irrespective of what model it originally came out of (in fact, I think Ford used that same model stacker from the EA/EB right up until at least the EL). One problem may be that the wiring for the stacker may not be present if the car was never fitted with one from the factory but that's OK, the stock mounting location (under the parcel shelf in the boot) is ridiculous. Having it under one of the front seats (as I believe the EL S packs did) is much more convenient. An MP3 stacker would, IMO, be a better buy as these offer much greater storage capacity for music however they're more costly and require extra buggering around to fit not to mention have a couple of quirks when used in conjunction with the factory H/Us.
