Hey all.
Just a mere 2 days ago I picked up a 6cylinder xf falcon, its on perfect condition with only 136xxx genuine ks on it, alloy head and factory 4speed manual. AND ONLY COST ME 150!! Might say I struck gold. Only there's a slight problem, the head gasket it f***ed, today I removed my exhaust manifod, intake manifold, rocker cover, rockers, push rods and now I've realised the head is stuck and I mean stuck! Any idea how to get the damn thing off? And it's going to need shaving, so what's the recommended amount to shave? Someone said 60thousands will do nice and give a bit of torque, but I'm worried the valves will hit pistons? Also what's you opinion on yella terra roller rockers? Hit or miss? Thanks guys. |

once you get it off, let the machinest decide what the minimum thickness to remove should be. 60thou? thats a giant amount, forget pistons on valves, you will be lucky they don't hit the crank!

You know there's an external head bolt that's not under the rocker cover I assume? it's where the earth lead bolts on. If it's not that, just gently tap it and pry it and you'll get it eventually. Hahahaha, the external head bolt, that would be why it won't budge!!
I've been completely dazed today. And that was my reaction to the 60thou comment. Just didn't seem right. Thanks guys. What's your opinion on the roller rockers? Worth it or stick. With the standards? |

If you are not sticking a big cam in it to rev over 5K stick with the standard steel rockers. Rollers on a stockie are a waste of time, and a PITA if you have the efi rocker because they hit it.

Got the head off and mostly cleaned up, replacing valves, valve stem seals, valve springs and got some new rockers and push rods, sending the head to the machinist and letting them decide how much needs to go, hoping to just skim it at around 10thou.
What's your opinions on lifters? Its only done 130xxx is it worth the trouble or will they be fine? |

Did you keep them in order of removal...each pair for each cylinder ???? If not....would be better off fitting a new timing chain set and a camshaft. Ford cams fitted to XD, XE & XF were renowned for being too soft and wearing out the lobes. Also, the only way to fit a new timing cover seal is to remove the timing cover as the seal is fitted from inside.

Remember when you put it back on to follow the tensioning sequence properly, especially regarding the lower torque for the external head bolt.

Yeah I've got all the torque setting written down so that's fine, looks like I'm going to fully rebuild the engine, getting a new double row timing chain and new Cam gear, and throwing a mild Cam in.
Also getting the head ported and custom stainless extractors and stainless 2 1/2" exhaust. Its all slowly coming together, pulled my back the other day so haven't been able to get any work done to it, hopefully once my backs better I'll be pulling the block out and rebuilding it entirely. What's your opinions on the flat top pistons? Too much compression? |
