Funny you should ask, I had the EEPROM changed over yesterday at Maxtech and it's working fine. Unlike you, they must have seen me coming as it cost me $60 but I'm happy with that as it was a good job.

Sorry about the cost, $60 is a bit steep, we don't have any SMD desoldering equipment in our Canberra office otherwise I could have done it for nothing. I have tried with Normal soldering iron and braid but lifted some tracks on one. Best left to those with the correct equipment.

Yeah $60 is a little steep but the job the have done is top grade. You can't even tell.
What they did was remove both EEPROM's from both boards, and change them over, soldering them back on, so I guess I had two done in affect. Not to worry its all done now and I'm happy, but not as happy as you would be having it done for $20.

Yeah, keep solderwick (sorry - sodderwick) away, it can do some pretty bad damage. The way I was shown was to use this stuff which is a thin metallic strip - you heat each IC leg in turn and wiggle this strip underneath each, an Epprom takes about 15-20 mins to remove. I've done two sets of two inst cluster boards and they work fine - the key is also to limit your heat ups to 5 sec bursts, but multiple heats are okay - the time taken during a heat up is the big factor. This method I'm told is better than using dedicated IC removal gear. Using a microscope is handy - makes it so much easier, not only for desolder, but to check the new soldered joints.
