Hey mate,
Technical documents are your friend! http://www.fordmods.com/documents.php?d=84 And the EF lid will fit on an EL box.

I have a pod in my box (ooh that sounds dirty), one can only assume opening up the intake created better flow, but I'm sure there's some technical info that probably proves otherwise.. Anyway, it would be good to do a quick dyno with a custom intake compared to a factory.. One thing I can say is it sounds different!

(Lol'd at "Blue Turd") So I guess then, with all that information in play now, you could say having a pod or panel comes down to personal choice of what looks the best to the car owner in terms of CAI setup. Still very interesting info to know.

i did it, i didn't notice any real performance gain just slightly improved throttle response. the extra induction noise sounds good. gallery.php?img=24242&mid=-1

The problem remains with the turbulence in the box. Hence the streamlined approach in the later model V8's with a tapered airbox fitting the pod and little else. In a standard airbox the only advantage you will have with a pod is increased noise. I've tried both also, the panel was a cheaper approach and maintained the grandpa look I was after at the time & still provided the same increase in power as the pod... which is bugger all.
And my pod installs were a fair bit more than just jamming a supercheap pod into the top of my airbox, I used mandrel bent stainless tube and K&N filter, I've even tried running a glass 6inch bore duct from the box to the front left brake damn for more air, just results in more noise.
