I installed cruise control today in my AU1 which previously didn't have cruise.
Buttons on wheel, combination switch (Blinker etc) Wire loom, Actuator. When I twist knob CRUISE lights up on the cluster but buttons on steering wheel don't do anything. I'm confident the buttons actually work because if I hold a button down and attempt to turn on the cruise control it won't turn on. Release any cruise button on the steering wheel and it will turn on. Any suggestions where to start looking for the fault? or something I have over looked. Wire loom that runs out to the actuator, oxygen sensor brakes etc. had an additional grey plug that my vehicle doesn't use. Where does this go? Is it my problem or am I the problem LOL? Thanks in advance, Tony

Tony,
That there grey plug sure is your issue I'd say... If not the issue it'll be at least one issue... Because the brake light switch is notorious for not working on the EF-AU cars if you press it and it fails then your cruise wont cancel... You need a fail safe and these are always a normally close switch... That way if the switch fails or a wire breaks it disables the system... Very few things ever fail closed esp a switch where a spring is forcing it open... On cruise variants a pressure sensor screws into the master cylinder and when you jump on the breaks in a hurry it activates and goes open circuit cancelling the cruise... I don't know enough about the AU to say if you can just screw a bung out of the master cylinder and screw the switch in or if you need a cruise variant master cylinder... If you can find an AU with cruise to have a look at and see exactly where it goes then that will help... When I put an EF actuator in my ED (same as AU nearly) I used the existing normally closed cruise switches on the pedals that ED's had... That is the back up for my brake light switch... But the EF-AU had no provision for a normally closed switch on the brake pedal so they went to the sensor in the master cylinder... Start with that and see how you go... Bridging that plug out will let you test the system... But don't leave it like that... It's a back up for a reason... Cheers, Tim

I have attached two pictures show the 6 plugs that come through the firewall.
5 have a home and also shown is the mystery grey plug. Perhaps someone could look at their AU & tell me what it does or where it goes. The AU cruise should be plug & play or so I thought.

It is plug and play if you install all the required parts... Like the back up cancel pressure switch I mentioned above... Pretty sure the switch screws into that bung on the end of motor side of the master cylinder...
All the other plugs are right... Just add the back up switch and plug that grey plug onto it like I said above... Cheers, Tim

Ok cool. So can I short that plug just for testing purposes?

or would it require a resistor?

Na short it out to test... For normal operation the switch is closed and under heavy braking it opens... Just don't leave I like that... As I said it's an emergency thing to cancel cruise if your brake light switch fails... Find out good used one or ebay a new switch and google a photo of an au engine bay... Sure it sticks out of the motor side of the master cylinder... If the car has cruise you should see it easy...
Cheers, Tim
