I re-gassed my air con in my ED a few months ago as I bought the car with 'no gas'. after getting it gassed it worked for about a few weeks nice and cold, although every time I would turn on the A/C the car on the inside would smell like A/C gas for the first 30 seconds or so and I either got high on the smell and thought it disappeared or it actually disappeared.
Any way point is, car has again run out of gas. Car is apart at the moment and can’t take it to auto electrician (for other reasons) so can anyone confirm from my above description if they think it’s the evaporator that’s leaking? I did have a similar situation happen in my XR6 a while ago but the air con lasted only a few days as opposed to a few weeks. Thanks

Without filling the system up with nitrogen and using a leak detector spray:
Your evaporator may be leaking Your condenser may be leaking Your dryer may be leaking Your compressor may be leaking Your TX valve may be leaking Pretty hard for us to say change the evaporator... Any part or any joint could have a leak... Without looking for it properly you can only suck it and see... Change the evaporator... If you run out of gas again pick something else to change... Although I feel for what the price of R134a is now, it'd probably be cheaper to fill it with nitrogen and check it for leaks first... (Good old Carbon Tax)... Cheers, Tim

Same thing happened in my XR6, replaced the TX valve (as there was coolant around it) and every fitting/join under the bonnet and within a few days it leaked out again...
I didn't bother finding the leak after that due to the reasons Timmy has listed, it could be anything... It'd be interesting to know what caused yours to leak though!

My evaporator literally exploded. I got it re gassed and the next day I started the car and few seconds later all this gas came out of the vents. Then the air con didn't work any more. $900 later...

Thanks for the input guys. The reason why i assumed evaporator was because of the similiar symptoms in my xr6, and because of the smell of gas in the actual cabin.
I did the evaporator in the xr6 and its such an annoying job. Because of this I might get the car running and take it to an auto electrician to check it out.

got the car checked out at an auto electrician. He could only see a leak at the o rings going into the compressor, he didnt/ couldnt rule out the evaporator. Im not convinced that its just the o rings though as that smell of gas when i first turn on the a/c is real evident. i might take it to some one else to check it out again before i commit to pulling the dash out.

What you can do is grab from a wrecker the hose sections that connect to the evaporator - the one back to the compressor needs the hose cut so the length is short - feed some compressed air (not too much to blow it up) and leak check it for a few hours. Remove the TX valve and do the same to the bare evaporator tube connections. As Timmy said nitrogen is preferred (no oxidisation of the refrigerant oil), but air is probably okay if you drain the evaporator of any residual oil. A pressure check will show leaks better than a vacuum one will.

I had the a/c tested and leak detection done, and they couldn't find any leaks, so they suggested the Evaporator was toast.....so I bought an Evaporator.
This is what my fan and evap looked like when I pulled them out. While I was at it, I got the a/c compressor rebuilt, and I cleaned out all the lines, and the condencer, had a new TX valve fitted, and all is good.....as well as new 'O'rings, and Reciever/drier too.
