Spoke to the boys at natrad about aluminium radiators.
They told me the cheap ones from ebay or made in china ect. leak coolant from the welds.
They get plenty of them. I think maybe electrolises from cheap aluminium can contribute aswell.
Stay away from cheap a** radiators.

I know someone with a Ebay alloy radiator in their mighty boy, been in there 2 years now without issues, using good quality coolant. Based on that I picked up one myself from the same mob he bought his from, as my stock radiator is dying and a new one locally is $500.

I'm sure the boys at natrad are going to tell you that to sell you their much more expensive radiator, but unless they are showing samples, I'd be inclined to believe there is more sales hype than truth to the story. I've had a aussie made radiator from natrad fail. Brand new rad in my torana, with good coolant, lasted not even one day, before it started to leak. They replaced it straight away and no problems since.

At the end of the day it's buyer beware isn't it?

Cheers

ToranaGuy

I do think that aswell. I guess you can get good ones & bad ones depends on the person who makes them at the time if he had sex or not.
I am a big believer on what you pay for is what you get.

Sorry to bring up an old thread guys but today my rad sprung a leak.

I'm looking into new ones and I'm thinking a copper one is best?

I'm just curious what the factory rads are made of?

I thought so but my Dad assumed aluminium he said older cars used copper but didnt think els did.

So I'm not sure what I should do. I need the car running by Saturday (assuming I haven't blown a head gasket)
I could buy a $90 ebay alloy rad that have a 2 year 50,000km warranty and see how that goes, I could get a new copper one for about $250 or I could find a 2nd hand copper one and take the risk that it's okay.
I will have the car for 3 more years while on my p's

if you can afford the copper one i would get it, if money is tight i would go a new alloy radiator over a used one...

I had to replace my radiator in the Eb Ghia recently, was very tight on $$ so I picked up an alloy radiator from one of my suppliers at work. Been in the car over a month now, no issues, runs at the correct temp, no leaks. I'm happy with it.

Also to update my post from back in 2011 in regards to the alloy radiator I fit to my mighty boy. It's now early 2013. It's still going good, no leaks, no corrosion issues, can't be happier with it. I'm running a 50/50 mix of coolant & tap water. Nothing special.

Unless you can get a radiator for less than $50 second hand, I wouldn't bother, as Troyman suggested, a cheap new alloy radiator is better than chancing a 2nd hand one.

Cheers

ToranaGuy

That's good to know :) Well my dad mentioned a place in berwick that does radiator repair so I'm going to call them in the morning and ask how much it will be to repair mine (apparently they replace the plastic tanks on the sides and also clean/fix up the cores) if it's a similar price to the alloy rad i'll just do that but otherwise i'll get an alloy rad.

Thanks guys
