HELLO,have been having what I thought was an alternator problem, but after 3 alternator swaps and 4 batterys(under warranty) I am at a loss,it started with the alternator light coming on so I swapped the alt with a used one and was good for a while, then the same thing again-so another used alternator, same deal lasted a short while-then out of curiousity I put the first alternator back in and was good for short period again,by now the battery was replaced twice(brand new),this time i got one out of my old eb which I knew was ok,now it seemed ok no light on-but battery died while engine was running but the alternator light never came on,If I had the money I would take it to a sparky, but being on a DSPension makes that inpossible, does anyone have any idea's on what may be going on,any help at all would really be appreciated!!!

Have you checked the voltage while the car is running? Check it at the battery terminal and at the alternator side. It should be around 13.5-14.5v. Also what car is it happening in?

Good point buckets4LTR, on my eb the wire you need to test is a yellow one. I haven't done any research on the alternator system on the fords but there might be a sensor wire that's not working? Maby someone can shed light onto this?

Hi,sorry it took so long, had trouble finding a functioning battery, brand new century wont hold charge, water gauge is still clear with red dot and will not go green, charged old battery enough to start and voltage read on alt side at 19.1 volts without lights on when I put lights on it coughed and spluttered then stopped before I could take another reading, have been searching for shorts through wiring but cannot find where the problem is coming from, any suggestions besides a match would be really appreciated.

19v is overcharging big time, so the 3 alternators you tried were secondhand??
time to stop trying alternators that may be just as stuffed as yours.. time to buy a new one |

So that would be enough to fry the batteries?,could it be anything else?just worried if I buy new alternator and battery(as they might not honour warranty) and the problems still there,im then stuffed money wise,I would have thought theres an underlying problem as chances off 3 alternaters being the same is unlikely, the last one was out of a eb that was charging good-although its the older alt with the fan on front & needed the plug adapter,So damn frustrating ,can anyone think of something that could be the cause before I buy a new alternater and I certainly dont want to fry anymore new batterys before I sort the charging problem out, anyone got any idea's?????????

The other thing was that its a fairly new engine(not new/low kms S/H engine) from a ed,could there be a connection wrong or a difference from eb to ed or a short causing it to over charge, and if so any suggestions on where to start looking

overcharging will fry batteries pretty fast, the only thing that will cause overcharging is a bad voltage regulator in the alternator...

Ahh damn, will have start saving, registering my ute-even on a DSP + frond end repairs, has devastated the budget, the missus is p****d having to drive my XG-ute,she was a bit happier with it once I put some Dragways & fat Eagers on it,but she needs her own wheels, have an EF -XR6 I bought for her birthday a couple of years ago,has low oil pressure atm,I may be better off putting my money into that even though it needs a blue slip,if I could fix the wagon and sell it-use money for the XR,tthanks troyman will let you know how it goes.

you could always try a voltage regulator from ebay (60 bucks), maby just go to an auto sparky they sometimes have second hand parts, they might give it to you for cheap.
sorry for the late reply!

I just got an alternator off ebay brand new $179 delivered. Is your power steer pump leaking out the back? It drips right down into the alternator, glugs up with dirt and they overheat frying the internals.
I just did my power steer hose today, getting a new serpentine belt and probably harmonic balancer to do at the same time as the alternator. I'm only getting 12-13 volts under load. If your car died when you loaded the electric system up it must've dropped below 10 volts, making the engine kack it.
