if you change diff gears the pinion AND crown wheel have to be changed. they are a matched pair. you have to set the pinion pre load and backlash on the gears once it's been changed. you cant unbolt old, put in new, slap it back together and she'll be right. $900 isn't bad for the full rebuild. if it was me i'd do that. then you know you got a good diff and warranty

your not picking up what i'm putting down. the gears have to be properly shimmed. or they'll be noisy or the diff will blow up

As mentioned...
There is shims in 1 thou increments... So you need a vast selection of them... You require the collapsable washer for the pinion... There is a special tool for holding the flange to undo the pinion... You shim the pinion according to whats stamped on it and comparing that to the workshop manual... Then insert it and tighten it, measuring with a spring scale until you have the correct amount of preload... Then insert the centre with the crown bolted to it... You will require a diff spreader to insert and remove this without damage... Shim up roughly... Put gear blue on the gears and roll around by hand... Check the mesh pattern... Depending how it is you may need to pull the whole thing apart again and re-shim the pinion, replace the collapsable washer again and set its preload again... If not remove centre and re-shim carrier... Keep repeating until proper mesh pattern is achieve... Bolt caps back on... Put back together... Not a job for the average joe... I know how to do it and not even I would attempt it... Without the tools, practise of doing heaps and having every possible sized shim at your finger tips... Not worth trying mate... 900 bucks is cheap considering this sort of thing may take a whole day to do by the time you frig around with shims and setting the pinion and that up... You say you wanna change gears? That practically is a whole rebuild... May as well change all the bearings while you're going to the hassle of re-shimming... Cheers, Tim

considering you will need new pinion bearsing just to change the gears, you may aswell spend the extra $60 on new carrier bearings as well. it would be pointless to to change everything but 2 of the bearings.

You can keep the pinion bearings can't you? Just the colapsable washer is the one use item?
Cheers, Tim

Dont like the chances of swapping a pinion bearing over without f**k it.
Also if it is in a Sandman van it ownt be a borg warner diff. It will be a Salisbury. They both load through the rear hat but different kettle of fish and Salisbury parts are not exactly thick on the ground.

still, 900 is very steep........ i was charged 900 to fit my supplied diff gears, and that included LSD & bearings & labour

maybe I missed it but is it an LSD or open centre? I called around for quotes and got the $400 ball park to swap gears for an open centre...
BW LSDs suck anyway, people are always complaining about how they single out after spending obscene amounts on them only 8 months after it was done. |

Just curious can i get a open wheeled diff and have it "converted" to LSD and gears changed , Reason for asking is i do not trust a old EA-EL LSD with 3.45 gears as it is so old and most likely will only single wheel or whine as all falcons diff do or back lash and give whipe lash |
