Hey Pete,
Mate if it were an EA-ED it'd still have a dipstick and you'd be issue free... Only way you will oil in it is jacking it up on the side of the road and using a hand pump and filling it from the filler plug... If it drives then drive it... When the oil gets low enough you'll simply have no drive... As long as the pump has oil in it and doesn't run dry you shouldn't do any damage from what I understand (somebody feel free to correct me if they know otherwise)... I'd be pulling the stick to 1st and staying there and keeping the revs low-ish... 25km will be a long drive... Don't have a mate with a car trailer? Cheers, Tim

Yep, its silly how Ford removes the dipstick on the later models, it just sounds like a no brainer to have one. I dont have anyone with a trailer. I might get a hand pump and some oil and see if i can get some oil into it. If anyone can tell me which side the filler plug is on or post a pic up for an AU, id be most appreciative. I'l wait to see if someone posts something about whether its safe driving it the way it is, and if its safe, il bring it back in the early hours of the morning when the roads are quiet. Hi just reading about your problem with the au
The fill plug is on the drivers side. I have actualy managed to do this without jacking the car (if your thin enough) Buy an oil can with a flexi nosel and cut the end off then you can use it to pump the transmition fluid in. I think the nut on the side of the gearbox is either a 15 or 17 mm use a ring spanner as it is easy to round off. They can be tight.Then just pump in fluid untill it starts to come back out. other option too would be a long plastic hose and a funnel get it up higher than the box outside the car and use that to fill it...
Funny talking about this... I asked the old man (who has worked at the Ford dealership here for what must be close to 30 years) what the go was behind it (even the BA/BF/FG models are a sealed box)... The idea was behind it... You pull up at a non self serve servo and the assistant would come out and fill you up... check your water and fluids and say oh your trans is down a bit... They wonder in, find the first trans fluid they have and fill it up for you... 5Km down the road the box was cactus... So the reasoning behind it is to stop people who don't know what there doing and which oil is required from servicing it in any way and hence the trend to making them sealed... Not at all a bad idea... In a way... Unless you like us here who know which oil they need and do want to be able to maintain them ourselves... Cheers, Tim

Hi Tim
I can see the logic in the fill plug then makes a lot of sence realy I had to find most of this out on my own as there are only a few falcons over here. I have tried to find an alternative transmision fluid available over here but have been unable to. So have had to ship it over. By the way a mate of mine has a ba ute do you also have to calibrate the auto box on them when you take the battery off? regards lee |

Whats it not doing right? I wouldn't think so, all the gear changing procedure is done by the gear box... The computer just initiates when to change gears... But without more details on whats wrong its hard to know where to start with the info... Guessing its a 4 speed auto? Cheers, Tim

Cheers, Tim Tim about 6 months ago a cooler line came of my BA and I lost enough oil to leave me with no drive in about a k. I had it towed home where I filled it up. I then took it to a mate of mine who is a tranny specialist for a full service and check it over. All seemed good. Now its in for a rebuild Now it might be just coincidence, but the car has only travelled 145,000 and the tranny is serviced every year and has had a cooler on it for the past 4 years. I wouldn't drive it without filling it up first and knowing how fast its leaking

I thought as long as it had drive then there would be enough oil for lubrication...
As soon as it starts slipping then the issue arises because you are over heating the clutch packs? Whats actually wrong with your madmax? Cheers, Tim

That's what my mate said, they stop working before they run out of oil.
What's happened to mine since then is it will violently snatch first gear if its been driven for a short trip then started again after sitting for 20mins. Doesn't do it stone cold and doesn't do it while driving even when sitting at the lights. However I reckon it will get worse and do it more often So just before Christmas my mate took the valve body off and found a piece of the piston seal and all this brown crap he said was friction material lying in the pan and on top of the valve body. The seal lip being in the pan indicates that the piston is moving too far and is caused by the clutch plates wearing. Luckily there was no metal in the pan So it need new seal, new clutch pack, new pump (he replaces them with an AU pump which is bigger) and whatever else he finds. Going to cost me $1000+ Anyway I took it in this morning, pick it up on friday

I bought an auto au just recently an lately ive noticed that, I'd start the car up drive down the road then it would go into neutral then like 2 seconds later slip back into drive an do a little chirpy, haha.

Most likely low trans fluid level. Add 500mls and see what happens.
