Hey guys, just curious....currently behind my 351 C I have a single rail 4 speed from an XF. I keep seeing 5 speeds coming up pretty cheap and was wondering about the interchangeability compared to my single rail. So, the questions raised are:
1) how do the input shafts compare ? diameter wise, spline and length...or, if different, can I hybridize a setup using, say, the clutch from the 5 speed? 2) are the bolt patterns of the bellhousing the same? i.e. will the 5 speed bolt up to the back of my existing bellhousing? 3) how does the single rail compare to the T5 lengthwise? 4) is the spline in the extension housing the same (or do they have the same uni joint?) In other words, can I just bolt up my existing tailshaft? As I say, just curious - if it is too different I wouldn't bother - in fact, there's nothing wrong with my current 4 speed, but if it ever goes sour, it'd be interesting to know if I could just chuck in a 5 speed instead...oh, and what are they like ratio wise compared to a single rail? Thanks ahead of time if you can help with my many questions!!!

2 bolts line up and the other 2 have to be drilled and tapped, the big hole in the centre of the bellhousing needs to be enlarged as well, xf t5 splines match xb-xd single rails with bolt on shifter housing not sure about the xe xf with shifter housing integral to the extension housing. hope this is helpful.

You'd be better off using a proper V8 spec T5, like from an ED XR8 Sprint.....they handle more torque than the 6 cyl T5's.
