Sounds like your sender unit is stuffed, I think they are the same unit for 6 as well as 8 but maybe someone can confirm that. Matt?

Yep they are the same between 6 and 8.
The box is going into Limp mode because its not getting a wheel speed signal.

Had the same problem with my btr. The speedo sender is the same for the T5 too.

Check the speedo gears. They had a problem of the clip that holds the Drive gear in place on the drive shaft breaking and allowing the gear to slide back and forward.

Before you go and spend the $$$ on a new sender, check what I said. The driven gear may have worn or, the drive gear may be moving. The check that the drive gear isn't moving, use a screwdriver in the hole and try to ,move it back and forward, if no movement and the teeth haven't been chewed out, then a sender could be the order of the day.

Is the speedo gears what the green wheel with teeth slot into in the gearbox or?

The plastic gear on the end of the sender is the Driven Gear and the one on the rear of the main shaft in the extension housing is the Drive gear. You will see instantly if the driven gear is stuffed but the one on the shaft not so easy to see. Use your finger to put in the hole after you have removed the sender unit to see if the drive gear is ok. You will know, it will either feel straight across or it will feel like it has a gully in it.
Like I said, if the Drive gear IS moving too much on the shaft, it will more than likely be that clip. The clip is available from Ford and you will need to take off the extension housing to get at it. |
