Hey guys, I've asked this before on the ford groups on Facebook but need a little more info,
Basically the other day I found that my right rear caliper is stuck on and the lower part of the pad is completely gone and is running on the back metal of the pad onto the rotor which now has a small grove on the rotor that i can feel with my finger(should I replace?), Now I am planning to replace both rear brake pads on both sides, and if its require replace both rotors also (has it would be the same price for machining?), now all I need to confirm is does one need to bleed the brakes after this or just remove some brake fluid and top up after all rear pads are replaced, and how does one regrease the slides?, has I been told that just may be my problem. Thanks..

EA-ED rear calipers were a rubbish design. The caliper has torington races in them and they rust and jam up. They have a silly screw centre part and it also jams up. I had and EB and the calipers on that had frozen, I removed them and spent a few hours fixing them, I had to put a seal kit through it, 2 new pistons and new bearings, a job I would NEVER do again. Might pay you to get a NEW/Used caliper from the wreckers and make sure it functions properly before you change it.
After you have fitted the caliper I would advise bleeding the system as if you have owned the car for more than 2 years it IS time to do so. Change the rotors too and make sure the caliper that isn't having the trouble is clean and working ok. BTW, the piston has to be WOUND out to fit pads as the core screw is an Archimedian screw type. |

uh ok was kinda of hoping to just regrease the slides or something, but if I have to rebuild it may has well get another caliper that works good I guess.
With bleeding, its just hose on bleeder valve into a coke bottle half full of brake fluid (clean), get someone to pump the brakes 3-4 times until there is no air in the hose and close it yeah, or have I read wrong? (in rear left brake.....rear right brake....etc, also do I need to bleed the front ones even though I haven't touch them?) Thanks, joys of learning something new . if I could do a EL brake conversion I would .

Have a read on bleeding brakes. Also consider a one man bleeder.
Get a few bottles of good fluid and change the lot, doesn't cost much and then its been done. |

Also may be a good idea to replace the handbrake springs. If they have lost tension they may cause the handbrake to drag and cause you problems. Happened to my car. Bought new springs from ford for around $20 the pair.

Definately looks like u need new rotors...
Make sure the slides move freely and are not stiff and make sure there is no drag from the handbrake when you reasemble it. And no changing rotors and pads does not require bleeding the brakes but make sure it dosent overflow from the reservoir.

yeah its only that one but will replace both sides, the top slide does have a little bit if give in it, but the bottom seems fine?, easy to move, not sure if i wanna regrease the slides and see if that will work or just replace it, also thinking the handbrake/piston is stuck, do eb's come with PBR brand calipers and brake booster has that is what they are.

I believe the EB calipers are PBR. The slides top and bottom need to move with hardly any resistance.
You can buy special caliper slide grease from the car shops.

uh ok, thinking top slide grease is has gone defiantly has resistance in it and it doesnt spring back like the bottom one?
Going to save some money (bills, no work) and replace pads and rotors on the rear and replace the caliper and see how it goes.

One slide has a little more resistance than the other....this is because it slides in rubber, no metal like the other....I use a silicone grease for the slides....doesn't harm the rubber, and is as slippery as a Butcher's pr!ck.
I don't have any problems with my calipers, as I change my brake fluid every 12 months.....they are approaching 10 years since I rebuilt them.....I also fitted new hoses at the time too.

Yeah watch a guy called Eric The Car Guy on youtube and he uses silicone grease too, since he lives over in the states, some of his videos are easy transferable to other vehicles, so once I get everything should be set, will let you's know if I need help.

ok so been reading this and am also not liking the setup on the rear of my nc newer e series have a better handbrake correct?????
if so could it be retrofitted to an earlier diff or could a newer diff be fitted to my nc i have heard of a difference in mounting points?????

I prefer the EA-ED rear calipers than the EF and later, as for the fact that you never have to adjust the park brake.......adjusting the park brake on EF and later, Commo's, Magna's, Camry's...are just a pain in the arze.
