Also, just wondering if your pump is cactus, you say it if fine for about 1km then you loose everything bar LHM. pull the top feed line off your new cooler with the car turned off, a** of it up on stands. Get a bucket.
start the car up, GET A MATE TO HELP. get that top feed line over the bucket, get him to put it in gear, but you only want to do it for a few seconds just to check you have good, strong flow. Its gonna come out pretty fast, thats why you will only do it for a few seconds. if the flow is reminiscent on an old guy taking a piss, then your pump is cactus. if its anything but a strong flow, again your pump is cactus. If your not achieving adequate flow from your pump, the fluid ill not even be circulating just sitting there getting hot.

I read my dads training manuals from when he was a trans specialist, the btr 97's have a trans overheat protection mode, when engine coolant temp hits 116 degrees the trans goes into limp home mode and comes back out at 113 deg. The only fix I can see is bypassing the radiator and putting a dirty great trans cooler on. That's what ill be doing when I whack my new alternator in.

That actually could be it because if the outside weather temp is cooler it takes longer to go into limp mode but on a hot day its only about half k down the rd in the extreme heat... I will let my husband know so we can look into prob doing the same thing.... Thanks Heaps 4 that info

Pull some fault codes. Deff sounds like its hitting limp mode somewhere along the line. Either that or the sensor in the box has let go?
As a side note, you mention the temp doesn't get above the 'o' in normal? when you put the dash in diag mode (more info in the resource tech docs from here) the running temp of ~91c is at or around the 'm' I wonder if the cooling system might need a clean/overhaul/look at just as a matter of course? Also, if as suggested the solution is to bypass the rad & fit a cooler, I would be looking at "WHY!" there must be a reason for this? shagged torque converter, blocked rad lines, burnt fluid, buggered sensor, faulty solenoids. Something must be causing this. All this heat is coming from slippage which is friction coming from somewhere. I wager a bet the fuel economy is also being effected by this slippage. Find that & fix it
