Hey all, I've been getting vibrations over 80k's in my EB II as well as some real bad gear shuddering problem (which is noticeable when reversing up hill). I tried super lows in it the other week and this made the vibrations way worse. I was thinking maybe the pinion angle was screwed.
I booked the car in with pedders they said the suspension was good except the rear uni needs to be replaced (as well as a tailshaft rebalance) but I've just replaced the rear uni because it was clunking. So I got under the car to see what all the fuss was about and the uni seems to be fine, but there's some play coming from the diff flange. This has me a bit worried and I'm assuming this is what he meant, the diff is a 3:23 ghia LSD and there's no play wheel to wheel, only on the flange. I also moved the tail shaft up/down and it has slight play in the back of the gearbox I think the extension seal/bushing is rooted (pedders didn't come up with this so not sure if it's fine or not). I read up about replacing it and I'm not sure if I need a press or if I can press this in myself (hammer/socket style or something along those lines). I'm going to replace this and hopefully it fixes something lol. While I'm at it should I get the tailshaft rebalanced? I thought it would be good to do this while it's out the car if possible. Any thoughts are much appreciated! |

Is that shaft is meant to be loose like that? Seems to be clunking too when I move it. It's the main shaft out the back of the gearbox, the tail shaft slots onto it, not sure if this is the input shaft or not. Any help would be much appreciated! |

The shaft at the back of the gearbox is the 'output shaft' and should have little to no play in it. If the bearing is worn out, it's a gearbox out job to fix it if you have a T5. From the repair manual, it looks like you can remove that rear housing if it's an auto gearbox. I haven't tried this so maybe someone else can on here advise whether it's possible.
With the tailshaft, you can press the universals out with a matching diameter socket and large (fixed) vice. However if you are getting the tailshaft rebalanced, I'd get the guys to replace the uni joints as well. Don't use Pedders. There are cheaper places. I'd look for a local tailshaft specialist.
