Hi all, I'm in the middle of a head gasket replacement, I've bought a genuine ford au mls gasket for my el xr6, although didn't come with the torque stages, I have rang ford and they reckon they can't find their torque specs etc, so they're no help, and they directed me to southern engine reconditioning so I called them, and told them I had a au mls gasket and they told me 30 foot pound first stage, then an extra 90 degrees for the second stage, but I converted the 30 foot pound and its 40nm, I was under the impression that torque setting is for composite gaskets and au mls ones were 30nm then 120 degrees? I just want some sturdy info before I put the head back on and not need to worry about it, thank you

Hey Mate,

Yeah my ED book says 40Nm + 90deg while the AU book says 30Nm + 120deg... Both of which were genuine ford books... When I did my VCT I did the bolts to 30+120...

Cheers,
Tim

40Nm + 90deg = E-series composite head gasket
30Nm + 120deg = AU MLS head gasket

Well that's what I think it means.

The Ford person must've been lazy, the reco mob - I wonder what sort of work they're putting out.

Use the torque settings for the particular gasket - usually in the packaging. In this case, AU settings as they're the official specs for that gasket.

There's plenty of head gasket threads here - some good explanations on the torque setting as well as why angular settings are used as well as a 2nd stage.
