Hi all. Just picked up a 1994 ef fairmont. The guy I bought it off lost his keys. He went to ford and purchased a blank key cut for his car and his locks. when trying to use this key it just set the alarm system off. alarm would then go off as soon as battery was connected. I replaced the ignition barrel (only the lock part, not the complete barrel that needs to be removed by drilling out the bolts). I put the new key in the ignition turned to the correct place to re program the key. The locks did not circulate and it only performed the smart lock by pass trick so the car could start. Once keys are removed process has to be repeated to get car started.
Do I need to replace the whole ignition barrel aka the whole silver bit that is held in with bolts that must be drilled out. Also can put the old barrel back in and program the blank key he got to the car Once the car fired it ran like a dog. I had to remove the airbag to remove lock part of barrel and now airbag warning light is displayed on dash (will check code tomoz) abs light also on dash. Is the car in limp home mode? I can't see iff it is stuck in third gear as I can't drive where it is. Any help or ideas would be appreciated Cheers

Hi,
There is no electronics in the key, it only turns the lock. The programming is for the remote, nothing to do with the operation of the car. The ignition is another thing though. Regards 96ELGli
