im about to help change a Head gasket on my Mates EF Falcon, & after a little searching i found the amazingly in depth doco from Phongus (that makes a Gregorys look sad!) anyway it looks like he has gone & stripped it back to a bare block.
anyway i have a chain block i can use to help us, do we really need to remove the intake manifold & the exhaust manifold? or can we just remove Rocker cover, rockers, cam, head bolts then just haul it up? i know there is more to it then that & the only real problem i can see is with the timing chain and how to deal with that? any help would be great!

to remove the head, yes, remove the inlet/exhaust & rocker cover [rocker so ya canna get to ya head bolts]. the head is not that heavy ... but ya can use the chain block if ya want to. i can't really help ya with the timing chain but the only part i understand with it is 2 cables ties holding chain to sprocket.

If you remove the bonnet, it makes it much easier, as you don't bang your head all the time also, you can stand up over the engine when you lift the head STRAIGHT UP so you don't break the cam chain guide at the front (like I did )
You can leave the manifolds on but it makes the assembly bloody heavy!! If you get the timing to TDC, you can cable tie the cam chain to the sprocket |

even if you leave them on, you'll still have to take them off once its out to get the head machined.
i found its easier to undo the manifold to head bolts than it is to get to the support brackets that hold the intake to the block.

Leave the intake where it is, just remove the intake to head bolts.
Take the exhaust mainfold off, it will be in the way when cleaning the block. I stuffed heavy paper towle down the oil drains and the timing cover before cleaning the block. Don't forget the remove the cam chain tensioner......and the 10mm headed bolt at the front of the head....this holds a cam chain guide.

cheers cjh, thank fully we didn't get it done today (or even started) on the count of rain, and certain critical tools that never showed up, those pics made things a bit clearer
