Hey guys, I've got an EL with some head work and an AU MLS head gasket.
I compression tested around 120-125psi across all cylinders, is this a bit low? Thanks much guys. |

I would think that is a bit low alright. You should be looking around 150psi per cylinder depending on the age of the engine and they should all be within 10 - 15 psi of each other.

That would be why I probably made about 138KW at the rears, I've got a fair bit of mods, CMS Stage 3 head with 2a cam, full exhaust and a dyno tune for 98.
Would the problem there be rings? Car has 230,000km on the clock. |

I'm fairly sure I have a CMS Stg 3 package, I know I have the cam but I don't know who done the headwork. I got 180psi +- 2psi.

Maybe a bit low, but as long as it's over about 110 and they're all pretty even I say it should still run pretty good.

It doesn't feel like it has much torque, you need about 1/2 throttle to maintain or accelerate up a mild hill and it tends to kick down when faced with a hill to get up it.
I'm not sure if this is an engine problem or its just the way these 4sp autos are. |

Just a comparison, I have an ED ( original unopened bottom end with 153,XXXkm on it ), with an EA cyl head, an ACL composite type head gasket, it has ED rocker gear, and an EF XR6 cam, with a standard cam sprocket.
They were all 185 psi, except for #1, which was 190 psi.

You cant really compare them if they have different cams, If your CMS cam has a fair amount of overlap its going to bring your cylinder compression down. With a stock cam you may be at 150psi or more.

not sure he hasn't said but I say a CMS stage 2 cam would have more overlap than a XR cam.

Replacement cams that are legal for street use won't have much more overlap than a std one, or wicked LSA's. They wouldn't pass an emissions test......and a wicked LSA won't give you good brakes either.

Not sure, it doesn't say anything. I very doubt they would of done emissions test to see if they pass. I doubt many car would pass with an after market cam.

I've got a set of new pistons, ACL race series rings and rods on the way anyways, planning to run minor boost down the track.
What else would I need for a bottom end rebuild? |
