Gday fellas I've got a ed xr6 with a el motor in it, when I start it the amp gauge is really low and there's a really loud squeal but when the amps rise after a few minutes the squeal goes away, I've replaced the idler pulleys, alternator and power steering pump but it still happens and the squeal is pissing me off
Cheers

Are you running serpentine or the original 2 belt set up? In either case, how's the belt condition? Have you tensioned the belt correctly?

It sounds like the belt is slipping on the alternator...either belt is not tensioned well or the belt is in crap condition causing slippage on the alternator pulley.

Alternator could also be jammed (something caught in there?) causing belt to slip over pulley without pulley moving...but highly unlikely scenario.

Its running the serpentine belt, I've replaced the belt and alternator, how do you tension the belt properly?

If you run the serpentine set up, the belt is automatically kept at correct tension with the belt tensioner provided it is in good condition.

The tensioner looks like this

Lets assume the tensioner is fine, is the belt okay? Brand new or old?

Also make sure ALL the pulleys are aligned. If they are not aligned, the belt can jump/shred quite quickly.

Have a look at the alternator then. If you can get your hands on a spare alternator to give it a try. Other than that I am not sure what else can cause it.

To me, squeal = slipping belt. Low amp = slipping belt or faulty alternator.

Sounds silly, but get a can of canola cooking spray s**t and spray the belt with motor running. My XG did the exact thing even though everything was fine. Sprayed some canola spray s**t on it and it shut up lol. Its a last resort thing but it just might work, or at least quiten it down a little. I also did the same on my landcruiser to shut it up.

The pic of the tensioner looks like an XH ute one.

Have you made sure all the pulleys are in line, including the harmonic balancer ????
Is the p/s pump leaking oil onto the alternator ????

Sounds like a belt tension problem.
If the belt has been slipping it is most likely burnt and you wont stop the squeal.
How far can you push the belt down at its longest point? If the tension is correct it should only have an inch or sos deflection.
While it is running hold a cake of dry soap against the ribs of the belt (obviously be carful and don't jam your fingers) a lot of times this will stop or at least minimise belt slip.

Yeah I just googled tensioner and didn't really look at the details. So I apologize if I posted the wrong pic, although normal tensioner looks similar.

Do you have the right tensioner fitted ????
EF, EL, XH XR6 ute (BBM) and AU ones are the same, however XH ute/van with log manifold is different.
