might just be that the highway work has stretched your fuel economy out a bit...... but considering the guage says you've got only 1/4 tank left, i reckon the trip computer might need resetting

Don't know about EL's but EF's have notoriously inaccurate fuel gauges.
They seem to have a mind of their own and point where they like.
Accurate when either full or empty is the best way to discribe them :)

The problem for the trip computer is that it gets fuel level info from the fuel sender via the instrument cluster. So when the trip computer calculates 'distance to empty' the result is much like the gauge - notoriously inaccurate.
Again reasonably accurate when the tank is full or empty, so not a huge help :(

Note that 'distance to empty' is calculated based on the remaining fuel level (which tends to be inaccurate) and consumption rate (which is dependant on your driving style and if city or country driving). Not sure if the consumption rate is a long term or short term avarage.

Cheers

LOL, compared to the gauge in my old Corona the one in the EF 'mont is right on the money.

That depends on how often you reset it. The average function periodically samples the instantaneous value and uses that to calculate the average.

Running Vortex 98 down the highway last weekend, I got 9.1l/100km, with the cruise set on 118.

When I got home, the D to E on the trip computer plus the tripmeter was over 700km.

Remember, pointing downhill the guage reads higher than pointing uphill.

Dang.

The owners manual seems to use three terms related to the trip computer:
- instantaneous fuel consumption rate (ltrs/100kms)
- avarage fuel consumption rate (ltrs/100kms)
- current fuel consumption rate (used to calculate remaining range in kms)

The owners manual does not explain the last term but from other readings, i understood that the average fuel consumptin rate (litres/100kms) displayed by the trip computer was not the consumption rate used to calculate remaining distance to empty. It is how the current fuel consumption rate is avaraged, and which is used in calculating the distance to empty, that i was not sure about.

Seems that the only reliable measure from the trip computer is the instantaneuos fuel consumption rate, and in any case, this is an estimation probably based on injector open time, rpm and load - not very reliable :)

Cheers

MY EF is weird with the fuel gague really weird with its reading. THe TC is fairly accurate seems average consumption is about 12L/km.
