Hi guys,

heres the story.

Drove from brissy all the way to south nsw and back, was really pleased with the falcon. Get home, have a snooze, go to the shop around the corner and it dies in the car park, Just like I would have simply turned it off.

Diagnosis so far has concluded there is no spark from any of the leads, or the coil pack lead. So I then got the multimeter and put it to the 2 wires that go to the coil pack and when cranking it fluctuated from 8.4 to 8.9 volts.

Now, I THINK this tells me the triggers are still fine??? IE, it narrows it down to the coil pack?? Or can this also be a dizzy??

Is there any other tests I can do with a multimeter that will help narrow it down so Im not spending a fortune fixing it??

I would throw a spare coil in or from another car if I had access to one. Unfortunately I dont.

Most likely your TFI has failed on the side of the dizzy. To check that theory. Remove the high tension lead from the centre of the dizzy cap and support the conductive end 6mm from the inlet manifold/head. Crank the car and see if you get a spark. If you get a spark, your coil and TFI are fine and the problem lies with the rotor, cap or leads. If you have no spark, disconnect the plug from the TFI module on the side of the dizzy and measure between pins 4 and 5 with the multimeter set to ohms. Should be 0.4-0.5 ohms. This is the resistance of the ignition coil primary winding. If this reading is out of spec, you either have a stuffed coil or the wiring to the coil is no good. Next check the resistance of the ignition coil secondary. Measure between the HT lead connection at the coil (lead removed) and pin 5 of the TFI module plug. Should be 7.1K-7.9Kohm.

If all these checkout, you most likely have a stuffed TFI.

Picked up a second hand coil from a mate last night and threw it in.

She fired first go!

I didnt think coils would just cark it suddenly. Luckily at the woolies car park and not in the middle of nowhere

I will definately take that advice and use it next time I have a spark issue.

My el falcon has just done the same thing as yours has. Did you just change the coil pack and it worked Again? And did your coil pack just die all together instantly?
