Does any one know how to set up the crank angle sensor on an EF 4.0 l falcon? after my engine rebuild i finally got it going but it will not idel steady it seems to be miss firing when placed into gear.
also noted that the timing chain had to be rotataed by a couple of links, this makes me think that perhaps the crank angle sensor may also need to be adjusted to make up for this shift. Thanks in advance |

Crank angle sensor is not adjustable, are you sure your aren't talking about the Cam Sensor?

no it's the unit that has a sticker on it "not Adjustable".
Just wanted to know where it should be pointing as the engine reaches TDC as it looks like it is not in the right position on the pick up when i remove the cover. |

The crank angle sensor is bolted to the timing case on the front of the motor and points down behind the harmonic balancer to pick on the notches in behind it... It is not adjustable...
The cam angle sensor drops in toward the front on the passenger side of the motor... It gives drive to the oil pump... It is not adjustable... You put a pin into it until it locks up solid and then insert rotating the crank until it drops in all the way and then tighten and remove the pin... I think... Are you sure the timing chain was out by a couple of links? That's a massive degrees difference? To clarify you slipped the chain two links at the cam chaft? Cheers, Tim

it's the cam angle sensor then that I am refering to.
I'll try the pin as I have seen the hole that you refer to. does it only have one position that it can slip into the drive gear? or is it like the old distributors that you could locate it by rotating a gear at the time. Thanks |

sorry forgot to add, yes the chain was moved by 2 links anticlockwise so that the cam rotated clockwise

Correct way to set the Cam Position Sensor is as follows.
1) Set the motor to TDC on the Harmonic Balance. Pull No1 plug and check the piston is set correctly. 2) Put a 4mm drill bit or rod into the Cam Position Sensor, there is only one hole and it can only locate one way. 3) Position the Cam Sensor into its hole you may need to rotate it slightly to get it to locate as the Oil Drive is a Hex rod. 4) Once done, lock down the sensor and remove the locating drill or rod. As long as the engine is at TDC you can't go wrong this way. If your Timing Chain has jumped a couple of teeth you will need to reset the chain. Mark on the Cam Gear should be approx 3mm above the lip of the head on the intake side. If it isn't then you will need to remove the cam gear and move the chain around the number of teeth required. You will need to rmove the chain tensioner to do this properly. DO NOT let the chain drop at all, keep as much tension on it that you can at all times. A couple of teeth out can bend valves. |

What SWC said... Forgot to mention it had to be on TDC...
Yeah just to move it 2 teeth is a lot... Why did you move it? Was it wrong or are you looking for horse power? Cheers, Tim

it was moved because it was installed incorrectly, it now lines up with the edge of the alum head as per SWC's comment.
I'll try the installation procedure as per your instructions. |
