So I went to the special stage of the Targa Adelaide last night with Dad and (as it does with most people) it put ideas in my head of becoming the world's best Racing Driver!
Dad did a lot of off-road racing back in his day. Started in a Zephyr then a Cortina (mkI then mkII) and finished in a mkII Esky. He spent the whole night telling me I was soft for not entering the XW in some events. As a result, I want to prove him wrong! So advice! What are some budget mods I can do to improve the old girls racing pedigree? It's currently running a 351C with twin 2" and extractors, C4 (B&M shifter) and 9" (non-LSD). Front disc and rear drums. Lowered, stiff springs and all new bushes. 15" globes. I was thinking the following: 1. A SET OF STICKERS WITH MY NAME ON THEM - Most important.... 2. Set of semi-slicks 3. LSD centre for the 9" 4. 16M steering box (not that interested in PS) 5. Minor engine tweaks? Better intake manifold and a set of cams? Any advice would be appreciated.

I was on goodwood rd taking some piks this morning! Keep in mind there's going to be a raft of safety stuff you'll need to do too...rollcage, seats, navigation equipment, fire extinguishers etc etc. Also, dunno how you'll go with an auto trans - might want to put a cooler on it at the very least..
Maybe go to the http://targa.com.au/tc/ website, they might have rules and regs of what is required safety wise?

Should clarify... I'd only be looking at entering the Special Stage and then do a few hill climbs and motorkhanas throughout the year as well.
These events only require you to have a CAMS L2S license and roadworthy car. Will obviously double check but I know this is the case for the Targa Special Stage. Nothing serious... Just a bit of fun.

I want the car to remain primarily a cruiser so was planning on sticking with the C4 as the shift kit and B&M shifter makes it more than fun enough to drive. I'm hoping for a happy medium between power and drivability. You think those mods fall into that category? Also, what is a good car to get rear disc brakes from? Trying to find good XW/XY ones would be costly I imagine. Finally, I was thinking of going for a brand new set of 3V heads or similar like these... thoughts?: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-FORD-302 ... 3738322%26

They're ProCrap heads...DON'T MENTION THEM AGAIN. You want genuine CHI 3V heads...
http://www.chiheads.com.au/ If you're not going the stroker route I'd use the 185's. XW didn't have disc brakes on the rear. You may have to go aftermarket because the ends/axles on XB up 9" rear ends are different. |

From experience or just an assumption? ... They are half the price of the CHI heads...

Ignore that... Just did a Google. ProComp sound good enough if you can be assed doing some extra finessing but not worth the hassle compared to a set of CHI's...

If you are worried about price now, you will probably have a heart attack if you see what it costs to enter the event let alone compete in motorsport. Stick to cruising mate and have a go at a cheap skidpan track day every now and then. Targa is an older rich gentleman sport haha.

As I said before, I'd only be looking at Special stages and come and try days. Special stage was only $180 this year and things like the Collingrove Hillclimb is around $80 an event. Not exactly pricey. Just a bit of fun.
Besides, money really doesn't worry me.
