When my foot is on my clutch (example - while in Neutral) there is no out of the ordinary sounds. But as soon as I left my foot off the clutch then im hearing a really bad rattling sound....... Likewise when Im driving - Im hearing a whinning sound while accelarating but not during gear changes. Really annoying and doesn't sound very good.
I have been told its either my Pilot or Thrust Bearing by one person....... Then another guy tells me its the bearing inside the actual gearbox (thus meaning a rebuild is needed).... What do you people think? And.... If its a rebuild should I consider getting an exchange box?? Thanks

Sounds like a thrust (also called your throw out) bearing. IF it was a bearing inside your gearbox it wouldnt be doing it only when the clutch is in. (I have had 3 thrust bearings go in 3 different cars so I know what it sounds like and when it happens).
While you are doing that you should do your clutch plate as well, which Im sure the mechanic that does the work for you will tell you anyway. Anyway, a F**k thrust bearing usually F**k the clutch plate too. Depending on where you go and the type of kit you get, you are probably looking at $400 plus for the new clutch and bearing. the bearing itself if only a $20 part, but you pay for the labour. |

sorry, was in a hurry before, did not get a time to write up a reply,
Im pretty sure it will be your clutch fork, or clutch cable, If you clutch cable is loose, ithe clutch fork will move around a bit, and rattle, thats why when you have your foot on the clutch a little bit it won't move or rattle Also, there is a little bolt inside the bellhousing that holds the clutch fork in place, this can come loose, and in voxace's car, fell out, get underneath your car, open the plastic flap where the clutch cable is, start your car in netrual and see if the clutch fork moves, if it does, (it will hit the bellhouing making a rattle) try tightening the clutch cable at the firewall . Hope this helps, and sorry about the quick reply before! |

i am also having probs with my gearbox in my eb. it makes a grinding noise in mid range revs (2000 - 2800), then again at high revs (3500+)
got a new clutch not long ago (as well as some s**t bracket worth nearly 200 bucks) also while in driving and i go over small bumps (manhole covers etc) i hear a metal on metal clanging. very disturbing. ps. sory to hijack your post, was gonna write my own, but this will probaly help more.
