I think one of my wheel bearings on the BA is going.. there is a whining noice when driving.. putting the car in neutral and coasting makes no difference and neither does braking.

I even put it in neutral and killed the engine on a perfectly straight flat stretch, is still there until it coasts to a stop.. this is on a car that just had a wheel alignment 5000 km ago.. I couldn't detect any change when cornering though either.

I jacked both wheels up and they spin freely with no noise and there is no slop as I couldn't wiggle the wheel at all.

It has to be the wheel bearings though.. if the car is on a perfectly flat straight surface and it whines, what else could it be? I've just priced some on ebay.. but if there is no slop and they make no noise when jacked up and hand spun.. could it really be them?

I recently did the front wheel bearings/ hubs on my au and it had noise even though there was no play....

I wish.. but no.. the noise only started today. tyres are nearly new Dunlop's. and the noise is kind of a vaguely metailic sounding squeal. plus its only coming from the passenger side and the tyres are all identical.

think I will take it for a drive later and do some hard cornering to see if it changes the noise.


oh its loud too. so much so that I expected the hub to be hot and it. wasn't

I just went for another hard drive.. The sound is a little bit like a fan belt squeal, except that you can put the car in neutral and rev the engine and the noise doesn't change.

Cornering didn't seem to make that much difference. but it did seem to lighten up a little when you turn hard.

Guess I should just order two hubs now and be done with it.. if it squeals constantly when coasting in a straight line on a flat road.. there isn't much else it could be.

it won't be bearings, it will be the drive belt

I turned the engine off and cloased in neutral.. noise is still there.

So in a straight line, on a flat surface with no corners or curves, with a non running engine..

running out of things to eliminate.

additionally, if it were a belt.. the noise would change with engine revs... this one changes with car speed. the engine revs make no difference, even when there are none.

its like $100 for 2 if that!

its 8 bolts and about 10 mins a side to do
and that includes jacking the car up!

i would advise to get a new nut on the hub though
