Can anyone PLEASE advise if it's major heart surgery to replace my ball joints on my EF Falcon. Or if anyone has any ideas what else this problem could be. It sounds like a pretty hefty clunk cornering and braking. Thanks Heaps all Luke

c**t of a job mate i did all 4 front ones on my ef and i'd rather pay some one esle aye sorry!

Main hassle is you need to get them pressed out, and new ones pressed in, so you'll need to take the steering knuckles to a mechanic for that.
Can be difficult to separate the ball joints from the upper control arm and lower control arm too. I used big levers and a hammer with a brass drift to persuade them, but took me a day to get them all out with hand tools. An air chisel to loosen them up might be helpful. Leave the nuts partially attached so that the steering knuckles don't fall out suddenly. WD40 left on overnight might help too. Given the difficulty of the job, don't skimp on the ball joints - use genuine or TRW ones. You don't want to be doing this again in 50,000km. Good luck.

awesome sounds like another good job I got myself in for. In the space of 2 weeks this thing went from dream car to lemon. ECU died, fuel gauge not working, Brake lights not working and now this clunk. Not happy Jan. Trucks are so much easier to work on the things we get ourselves into. thanks guys!

I usually take my ball joints & stub's to pedders & get them to remove the old & refit the new. Last time that cost me $50 for all 4 ball joints. Dropped off in the morning & picked up at lunch time. Well worth it. I do press my own bushes tho. Much easier than the ball joints.

just did the lower ball joint on my el or ef its 96 anyway, was a mean c***,trying to get it out wouldnt fit under the press because of the awkard shape and wouldnt budge with the lumpy hammer...ended up drilling about 5 holes across the center with the hand drill then heated up with fire and bashed it some more. untill, pop it came out
my brake lights gave out too ,i found out its pretty common if you pull the black box thingy of the pedal and bend the brass looking tabs in a lil they come right too much and they stay on..duno if thats already been said before ,hope it helps someone |

Hubby usually does all my repairs (including ball joint replacement) Job didn't progress very well yesterday. Problems removing them. Tried pressing them out - no good. This morning tried piece of gal tube over underside of ball joint supporting top end and used a VBH. By the time I had googled this site he had 2 on one side out, replaced and back in. Yeeha, one to go. Thanks to those for previous posts on this subject. He was beginning to think it was him.

I know what you mean, a lot of workshops don't see the point in buying the tools, ie the ball joint tool & some extra plates & tubes for their press, to only do a couple a year. I have the ball joint too on my wish list (I have a press, plates & tubes to use), but there are other tools higher up the list to get first, when funds permit. Cheers ToranaGuy

It needs a proper hydraulic press. Last time I took mine to an automotive engineering shop, and even they had to fight for over two hours, trying every trick in the book to get the old one out. Maybe a specialist suspension place like Pedders would have custom tooling to do the job easily. But attempting it at home is probably a frustrating waste of time.

Yeah i have a press i need to do all four so i was wondering if a tool would be a cheaper way to go than paying someone to do a hr job as i would remove them and take them in to be done

I bought one of these from repco when they had 20% off. G&G technics EF/EL ball joint remover/installer. it was $130 after discount from memory. you will still need a press tho.
