Hi fellas,

I recently picked up a EL xr8 that I am trying to get on the road. As with all EL the exhaust was rusted out. I just picked up complete mandrel bent 3inch exhaust system from wreckers today.

But the only thing is it has straight pipes and no cats. Now I know it would cool and have a awesome sound but won't help for a rwc.

I just wanted to know what my options are in regards to cats.

Can I install aftermarket high flow cats and still pass rwc?

Or do I have to run standard gear and if so what cats are compatible with the EL XR8? As in can I use BA cats etc?

Cheers in advance

When you say "complete", you mean extractors/headers too?
Im of the opinion any cat will do, as long as its there... Thats how I read the vicroads rwc guide anyway...
I believe magnaflow hi flow cats are good quality and relatively cheap... Just weld it in.
Or, depending whos doing the rwc, just whack in a hollow one that looks the part? But ofcourse I dont condone that... ;)

Otherwise, where in melb are you?, I have a stock ef v8, you can have the complete exhaust off that if youd like, just to pass rwc?

My understanding is less CPI (cells per inch?) = higher flow = less 'filtering' = maybe not passing an emissions test.

Not sure which (if any) states do a test as part of the RWC but might be better to be safe than sorry if you're going for one. From what I've read 200 CPI is usually okay. Think the stock is 400 CPI.

Thanks for the info guys. I am in the western suburbs.

I don't have extractors or nothing. The car did come with the el gt factory extractors. I just have the full exhaust system with straight pipes and no cats.

So I wanted to find out if I could use a cat from say a ba or bf maybe because all the older cats are rusted out.

Once I have passed rwc I might put the straight pipes back on. But most likely just go with high flow cats.

Hi flow cats are a waste of money. Get hold of some stock ones that'll bolt straight up. Never seen any cats rust out.

Cool thanks mate. I will have another look at mine and see if I can use the stock cats if they are not too bad.

Vic roads/ the workshop doing your RWC wont/dont do emissions testing. Nothing to worry about there.

Section F of the Vic roads vehicle roadworthy requirements only states that if the car was fitted with a cat, it must be on the vehicle, and not appear inoperable in any way...

The el gt headers are supposedly pretty good.
I live in eastern subs, fair way out, but my offer still stands. You can have my stock cats.
