I'm glad that in this thread has actually paid off for some people. I didn't think it was going to take this long though.

On the MSD front. I have lost count of how many MSD ignition components i've fitted to cars over the years. Ranging from ready to run dizzies with coils, to full on pro billet dizzy with Boost timing master and coils on supercharged small block chevs, to A digital programmable 7 with HVC coil on the nitrous fed 428 XD falcon. and loads of other dizzy coil combos.

I've a failure of two DIS4/2 ignitions and one 6AL

It's a decent failure ratio and all failures were fixed at no cost.

OK, I have had a prowl around the US Mustang forums and there is plenty of discussion concerning aftermarket coils, mainly the Screamin Demon and the Accel, very little about MSD. Of the comments made there appears that the Accel may be the better coil. Many had negative comments about the Screamin Demon with few negatives for the Accel. Of all the positive comments, they stated that there was an improvement with response as well as Fuel consumtion. While consumption is not one of my priorites, it is nice to know and on a stock motor this would be a distinct advantage.

One intersting thing that I found for the MSD coil, is that while Summit list it, MSD don't, strange :? .

Pricing from Summit site are;
Vertical Plug
MSD 5528 - US$76.00
Screamin Demon 31736 - US$89.00
Accel 140036 - US$94.00

Horizontal Plug
Screamin Demon 31738 -US$89.00
Accel 140035 - US$85.00

These are + Freight.

Summit Ebay list them at

Screamin Demon 31736 - US$99.00
Accel 140036 - US$104.00
Accel 140035 - US$95.00
Freight is AU$15.14

Prices are US$10.00 dearer but freight is $20.00 cheaper.

At this stage I am leaning towards the Accel 140035 Horizontal plug.

I will update as I go. I have a 4.0L Explorer coil here, which is the same as the Accel 140035, so I will try it out with that as I am waiting for the Coil to arrive from the US.

Are you going to mount it in the same position? Or move it to somewhere with easier access?

No Pics at this time, my mounts for the coil are welded to the rocker, special set up. I have made a plate for a mate that bolts up useing the 2 rear rocker cover bolts, you use the threaded end bolts from the EF. With the coil mounted to the rear you need to use the EL intake elbow and the EL intake or a custom pipe. You need to extend the coil plug wires.

Well, I finally got around to fitting the Accel coil after many months of no car (engine) and letting the new one settle in a little before upgrading.

Must say that it is a big improvemnet over the EF/AU1 coil. My old coil was only about 10,000km old so the comparison was pretty much new v new.

Much more responsive and feels smoother. I have been running it for a bit over a week now and very happy.

You will be able to use the EF Plug on the Accel 140035 Horizontal Plug and the Accel 140036 Vetical Plug.

You will need to have custom leads made up as you will need the straight plug as per you standard leads for the Spark Plug and AU V8 Coil Pack plugs for the coil.

I had mine made up by Auto Pro, cost be $85.00. Any decent Auto Elec should be able to help you out.

Firing order is as below.

I would suggest a remote mount as the factory position sucks. Also if fitting there it would be very difficult to fit the leads to the coil.

thanks for that, yeah i was thinking of mounting it either back of the rocker cover or on the firewall somehow. and i was going to get custom leads made up. i should be able to make up the leads at the workshop.
thanks again

Youy will also need to make some mount plates for the bottom as well. The locating holes on the Accel etc are not flat on the base like the EF Coil.

I have an alloy plate here somewhere that I made to mount on the factory EF Rocker cover. I will see if I can find it. You need to use the EL or AU air pipework to mount it.

If I can be of any further help just yell.
