just driving home from darts and turn the radio down to see what I could hear a whining noise coming from the engine so when I got home i pop the bonnet to have a better listen and the whining noise appears to be coming from the top of the rocket cover now could this be a timing chain tensioner problem or something worse?

Could be a few things....broken cam chain guide, over tensioned cam chain tensioner, power steering pump oil level too low, alt. bearings going, water pump bearings going, belt tensioner pulley bearings going......etc...... Any previous work done lately ?????

I will put a bet on it being the top timing chain guide.
It happened to mine and I just let it go (engine had around 400K kms on it so wasn't too fussed what happened). It lasted 2 years not being driven lightly as is. If your motors fairly good though I'd replace it as soon as you can, my chain ended up snapping and completely destroyed the motor.

Well that sucks if it is. Gonna have to pull the motor out to fix that if it is.

well pull off the power steering pump etc to get to the tensioner and as I was trying to get it out in one piece the last main bit wouldn't come out so I took of the rocket cover to see what was going on and I found this piece of timing chain guide sitting there.

They usually get broken by someone not watching what they are doing when removing or refitting the cylinder head.....looks like the one that a bolt goes through the front of the head to hold it.
