hey all
i have an na fairlane that has come up with an interesting wiring problem when the car is at idle in the day it is fine but when i put on the headlights they dont work and the dash lights go off, when i put the hazzards on they make the dash go spastic and when the ignition is off and you put the reds on it takes a while for everything to come up and it wont start in that period of no dashness anyway if anyone has any idea it would help i have checked the headlight wiring and all the earths and relays but it sounds like a dash fault oh well |

Thats definitely an earth problem. Start by checking and cleaning all the wiring connectors on the negative side of the battery. And make sure none of the smaller black wires have not broken off their eye connector at the battery and dropped down where they can't be seen.

thanks for your reply i have found the earth problem and it is fixed i know have a new problem
when i am idling the car is charging fine but when i have heavy load it drains the power like if i have the headlights on or something it drains the battery after a while especially on freeway driving could this be a regulator or an alternator problem when i checked it it was charging at 14.1v at idle so what do you think thankx |

Tighten up your alternator belt. I have seen them work fine but slip a little under load and speed. Another easy way to check is feel the alternator belt pulley, if it's been slipping it will get hot to touch.
