hey guys just a quick question Ive notice on the au motor that the top cog mark is at 9 o'clock when TDC. now when fitting EL tickford head & rocket gear do I set the timing up as normal u would on a EL.

Doubtful... On TDC firing no1 it is 3degrees above the rocker cover level on the right hand side... On TDC rocking no1 it'll be 3 degrees down on the left hand side... You sure you have the right TDC set up?

yep im pretty sure the no.1 piston was at the top

Of course the piston is at the top... It's at the top on both TDC no1 firing and TDC no1 rocking... What I'm asking is which one was it?
Remember it's a 4 stroke motor... For every 2 crank turns the cam does one... so if you had that mark at 9o'clock and rotated the crank one more turn to TDC again the cam would be at the 3 oclock position... I am thinking you had the motor at the wrong TDC... No E/A series block times the crank in at 9 o'clock... To prove it I attached the photo from the Genuine Ford AUII Workshop manual above... Doesn't phase me in the slightest... I'm here to help... But you need to understand when you wound the AU over to TDC before you pulled it apart it wasn't TDC firing no1... It was 180 cam degrees out (360 crank degrees)...
If you then try to time the ign to the crank you will probably cause damage if it back fires... You need to make sure you have the crank and cam in the right phase before inserting the dizzy and doing timing... Something you should understand before getting too involved to ensure you don't do any damage... Cheers, Tim

I got the marks in the right spot now. on the verier gear im pretty sure its just got the one mark on it which is the line and that needs to be point at 3 o'clock yeah?
