Hi

I'm looking for some gearbox advice.

I'm making a shopping list for a dohc i6 conversion. I want to use a t5 box due to the need for a manual and the price difference over t56. I also want hydraulic clutch. I'm not interested in expensive hydraulic clutch conversion kits as it seems to bring the price close to t56 territory.

So after a bit of research I'm still a little confused.

I'm reading about the different length t5 with different shifter locations and different input shaft splines and lengths.

I want to set up the car with clutch, gearbox crossmember, shifter location and tailshaft to suit a readily available t5 box so if I brake it I can easily and cheaply put another one in.

Can anyone help with what box, bell housing, and clutch I need?

I think I want a ba t5 bell housing, flywheel, pressure plate and TO bearing, with an AU?? Or E? T5 and pressure plate?

Am I on the right track?

Thanks for any input.

That would depend on what model Falcon this is all going in. If It's an E series shell, you would want an E series box so that the shifter will line up with the hole in the floor pan.

That said, I don't know if a BA bell housing is the same length as an E series item. BenJ has a BA engine, AU bell housing and EA box in his EB.

It would be nice to have a hydraulic clutch. The cable clutch is damn heavy in comparison.

Thanks for the reply. It's not going into a falcon, it's for a bmw.

Yea who knows why t5's Had cable clutches for sooo long. Even datsuns had hydraulic clutches in the 60's. I just can't bring myself to spend 1500+ on a t56 for this project, or convert the bimma to cable clutch.

It's not like all this is expensive, I've found a ba t5 with clutch, flywheel, bell housing etc for under 500. I'm just worried if I set the car up ( h/d clutch, custom tailshaft and gearbox xmember etc) for a ba t5, it might turn out they are hard to find and I have re do a lot of things to put a readily available pre ba t5 in, due to different length and input shafts...

P.s. I am aware about the ba abs models (almost all?) not having a speedo drive. I'm half tempted to put the donor ba cluster in the bmw dash (it doesn't need to be pretty and I will use stock ecu).
