Hey all. I have a eb 3.9L and it's been running sweet as.
Then I drove tonight to get dinner get home and it's making a whirring noise that sounds awfully like a noisy p/steer pump but it's coming from the distributer area.
The noise gets louder/ quieter with rpm.
I'm thinking my distributor bearing maybe?
Ideas?
Thanks.

Lift the dizzy cap off and wiggle.the rotor button, see if there's any slop.there . Start the.car get under the hood and give some rpm if it is.the.dizzy, replace it

I have the same problem as u do but mine end up being the timing chain guide on the tensioner side that snap which then because it self adjusted after it snap to fix the slack on the chain that when it started to make the whirring sound as it was abit too tight when it self adjusted as rpm was increase it got louder. I hope this isn't to be ur problem tho.

I have had this happen a few times....it was the dizzy's top bush going dry ( elcheapo dizzy ).
The oil hole wasn't blocked either.

Thanks guys. I doubt it's the guide as I replaced all guides when I did the head about 2 years ago, saying that I've been driving hard and I've seen them prematurely fail before.
Will be pulling the dissy when I can and will let you know

Well this is what's happened.
Did you just replace the chain and guides and put in a new dissy or was more damage done?

So i got a bit of a f**k problem.
Replaced the timing chain kit today. Have all the markes perfect. I mean perfect, even the cam gear is almost perfectly online with the head - not the usual 3° up.
Turned it over 4 full revs and re checked it. All good.
Now when I put the dizzy back it it wouldn't fire when the rotors pointing at start, but if I retard the timing as far as it would go (wiring plug up against the block) it would run ok ish but had a rev hang at about 1200 and still had a slight noise from the dizzy.
So I pull the dizzy out again and pull the rotor and cover off to have a look, noticed the wiring just touching on the metal part of the hall effect (that spins) so I bent them back just enough so they don't touch and put it back together and back in the car.
Now it wont start at all. If I have it set to Start it'll pop and bog down whilst cranking and if I put it back to where it was working before it'll just crank and crank.
And then the Missy has to go to work and I got dad duties.
I'll be checking spark tomorrow and pulling the R/C to re recheck the timing.
But any one experienced this before?
I've Done guides on 4.0s that have had the oil pump timing atleast a tooth out and still ran so I don't know what's going on.
Kinda p****d off

Hang on, stop press.
The start finish on the distributor ends up with it aiming at #5. I'm re doing the dizzy tomorro to fire at #1 and see how we go.
