I need a little advice and help. I've got a 30th anniversary EA, and have been having a little trouble of late, including; rough idle, losing coolant, overheating (due to coolant), minor oil leaks. I fear that I have a blown head gasket. I checked the radiator and oil for emulsion, with none. The coolant is going at about 2 litres a week, but my oil level hasn't moved. I taped a bottle to the overflow pipe to see if it's coming out there, NO. I'm going to drain the sump and check for water (unless otherwise advised). I've checked the plugs for any staining or moisture, nope. I can't figure it out.
Would a blown HG affect my compression? What is a head gasket going to cost me to fix, at a mechanic (remember, alloy head)?
ANY advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Yes, compression can leak between cylinders, or outside depending on where HG has failed

Mine cost me just over $700, including independant inspection & machining by All Head Services, with their 12 month nationwide warranty.

Your coolant is probably mixing into your combustion chamber. A compression test should show this up.

well if it's not going down in the sump it must be heading out somewhere.

mine used to do through one overflow bottle a week,,never saw it and even a pressure test never showed anything was wrong.

so i replaced the hg and its fine,,never loose water and it runs better.

If you are on tight budget? Try replacing head bolts with new ones [$40]and tighten them real tight..Check but from memory its 40 nm then 90*...Then add some chemi weld...Not Bars leaks as its s**t...
It may get you out of trouble...Its the head bolts loosing there tension over time as alloy expanse heaps weakening head bolts elasticity...

Checked the sump. No coolant, but I found a bit of coolant on the driveway this morning (yay... I think). So I think it may be a HP hose loose or split. I had the Water pump replaced a few weeks ago and the idiot left all the hose clamps loose. So I think I'll just check the 475 hoses in there for any leaks under pressure. Might tell you all what it is if I ever find out. Thanks to all who helped.

Exactly the same thing happend to me, my head cracked at the back if the engine (around no. 5 or 6 cyl.) coolant leaked out when engine was hot and went all over the CAT and dryed up, left absolutly no trace, the only place it diddnt dry up from was the few drops around the welch plugs, hence in the begining thats what we thought it was. HOWEVER it is not the end. mine has been in the same condition now for around 9 months, and is still running fine, havent lost a drop since problem was correctly diagnosed. the cure, a 7 dollar bottle of 'chemi-weld' available from supercheap. do this every few months (ive done it 3 times) and she will be right till you can get some money together.

For anyone still interested I'm 99% sure it's the HG. Still haven't found any real evidence, but I got a lovely exhaust smell out the overflow bottle  . Might try the chemi-weld for a while, Thanks EBeast.
