Hi all,
having issues with my ignition system on my 1993 fairlane v8. drove out of my house the other day, about 300m down the road, it stalls and dies. oil light on. first thing, check oil. all ok. filled up fuel because it was low, and about to run out. still no good. just cranking and no fire. have replaced dizzy, tfi module, plugs, leads, coil. my mechanic is stumped as to what could be the problem. today he suggested either a ecu fault or a break in the wiring harness. i bought a new ecu, still no good. so my thoughts are that maybe a ground on the ignition coil has come loose. car has fuel, has injector pulse, fuel pump working, fuel is under pressure in fuel rail. timing is correct. combustion is correct. all ignition components are brand new. is there anything else possible that i can check? otherwise what are my options? where is the ground for the coil located. all your help is appreciated, just want to get my car back on the road . cheers, fred |

Do you have spark. Is the interior light on. Maybe smartlock activated and its killing the spark. Check all fuses and ensure none are blow.

Hi Brett. Appreciate the help. There is a weak spark comin directly through the coil. All the interior lights do work and no fuses are blown. Cheers

Check the spark from one of the plugs. Pull one lead, put a plug in it and earth it to the body. Crank and see if you have a strong spark. If not start looking for issues with the ignition system, or even the BCM. My 6Pack ED died due to a BCM issue, would crank but no spark. Had fuel and pressure, so maybe look there. Sounds like it might me immobilised.

Common problem is the terminals on the coil get bent when plugging the two wire plug into the coil.
No contact means no go. I chased that problem for 2 days when I did the motor change in the Maverick.

If it was immobilised I would have though that there would be no spark at all? It does have a weak spark, and the terminals are good, have tried with 3 different known working coils

Plugging a spark plug directly in the coil produces a weak spark. No spark is produce from the dizzy however. Brand new dizzy so not that, especially since the problem lies somewhere before the spark reaches the coil. Is there a ground for the coil I can check? Seems like maybe a weak earth. Mechanic is still looking for a broken wire in the harness but don't want to run up workshop fees for nothing, especially at $110 per hour. Thanks again for everyone's help. Any further advice is appreciated.

Get your mechanic to hookup a scanner to the OBD1 port, and see what codes it is giving. Then go from there.

Do you have a cut out that is possibly turned on ?. Or faulty tacho or wiring to same ? disconnect coil plug connect one end of test light to earth and test for power with ignition on at coil plug --- Test for negative pulse with a tungsten type globe between 5 & 21watts not a LED test light, make one by connecting wires to a globe and insulating if necessary - connect one end to positive of battery other end to pulse circuit normally pink with blue trace at coil plug and crank - globe should noticeably flash when cranking - coil does not need to be physically mounted or earthed to operate just the two wires in connecting plug and high tension connection - check screws mounting tfi module are tight and black earth wire to module is earthed .Check ignition feed to module has power with ignition on ,check pulse circuit pink with blue trace which runs from the TFI module to the coil plug has continuity and is not shorting to engine ......

Problem solved! Wire came loose off the ecu harness and produced a weak spark. Coupled with a snapped dizzy rotor pin this was the problem. Word of advice. Do not use start ya bastard on a fuel injected engine. Rac done this in an attempt to start It
When it first stalled and it blew out all the vacuum lines and injector seals, aswell as whatever internal damage has been done. We have open an investigation with rac and hope to see it fixed. Thanks everyone for your help, greatly appreciated. Fred |
