ok i have had several brief looks around and cant find anything to help so here goes again.....
i have just changed engine in my xg ute, new ef block and ebII xr6 head(was running same head before, just blew a con rod hense new block). i have fitted new head gasket, fuel pump, coil, dizzy and plugs. i have got it starting but it idles(barley) really rough and shakes the whole car, and when i try to accelerate it wont do anything except shake more .....but it starts up just fine. for what i can only think of is timing related.....i have set to top dead centre, cam set to LHS of head's face and distributer to the 1st mark, i start the car then adjust distributer until it runs and accelerating properly but its not getting any better with the adjustment..... what could i be doing wrong??? ive never had this trouble with an engine change before...... |

Leads going to the right spark plug? I had a similar issue when I did a head gasket.. Turned out to be 3rd and 4th plug leads were swapped.
Get it idling and unplug the injectors one by one. If no difference that cylinder may have a wrong lead. Not accidentally 180 out with the dizzy? Although no so likely if it starts easy. Err.. Just had a re read.... You say the cam timing mark is on the left side of the head? If so, the Problem Is there... Cam gear mark needs to line up to about 2-3mm on the RIGHT side of the head..

Yes. Your right there Ranga.. Macca, you said left side of head face so I assumed that was oriented from lookin at the head.. So I will re-define that... Timing mark goes 2-3mm above RHS of the head WHEN LOOKING FROM FRONT OF CAR. Let us know how you go dude..

Would make it much easier if we would just call it Passenger and Drivers side OR Intake/Exhaust side.
In this case, you want the cam sprocket notch on the Intake/Passenger side, not the other! Also, I'm sure at TDC, the distributor should be pointing at END not start?

k, thanks for reply guys, yes the "left hand side" is passenger side, should've said that
i have checked over leads several times and im absolutly positive that they are not mixed up, i have made that mistake before... im also sure that there are no vacum leaks whatsoever and im not sure exactly about the distributer pos either. i have done this 50 odd times and never had issue until today. what i have done to set timing allingnment is: 1. set harmonic ballancer to TDC using the pistons(with head off) and the timing mark. 2. set cam timing mark level with passenger side of head. 3. insert distributer set to 1 or start position. 4. start car and adjust distributer until idle is steady and engine will rev properly(also use timing light). now its not cooperating with me for step 4......car starts but when i go to rev it, it takes about 5sec's to actually rev up. some times when i give it throttle it will just stall. driving me nuts now..... |

This f**k me up the other week,
Does you're distributor say start - finish. Because start is not cyl 1, finish is cyl1. My eb did the same thing, it'd start but not rev up and shook the shed like buggery. |

Oh ok, I wasn't quite sure about that. Like I said, I just put it on start, then adjust until its running smooth.....I'll look into that n see if it makes a difference but that might need to wait now as the fuel pump has s**t it's self

OK here is an update guys...
The issue was fuel pump. Seems the pump I took out of the missus car must have been on its way out and had just enough pressure to start the car but not enough to feed it with acceleration. Chucked in new pump and she was running sweet as. Also confirmed that with the harmonic balancer set at TDC, the cam gear mark should be 1 tooth back from level with head(passenger side)or about 3mm above the flat of head. Distributer is set so rotor is inline with the 1st cylinder mark. Good throttle n pickup now Thanks for the replays any way guys and hopefully this will be help to others in future. |
